One Writer Couldn’t Wait for GTA 6’s Fuel System — So He Modded It Into GTA 5
Grand Theft Auto 6 is less than three months away, and the waiting has officially started producing art. PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens is in the middle of a gloriously unhinged experiment: modding GTA 5 every single day, in his words, “in a quest to either transform it into a PC version of GTA 6 or break it entirely.” And this week, he crossed a milestone that speaks for an entire fandom — he installed a mod that recreates GTA 6’s most argued-about mechanic, car fuel, inside Los Santos. Working pumps, handheld nozzles, physics-rope hoses and all.
Here’s the part that makes it perfect: fuel is the one headline GTA 6 feature Rockstar still hasn’t shown on its own channels. It entered the record through leaked footage first, then survived into hands-on preview reports. So while the rest of us refresh the Newswire, one man is already living the fuel-sim life — one catastrophic test drive at a time.
What Happened: GTA 6’s Fuel System, Running in Los Santos Today
Wolens’ daily series has already inflicted a staggering amount of nonsense on Rockstar’s 2013 sandbox — missiles, punishable NPCs, teleporting Franklin — but the latest entry goes straight for GTA 6’s soul. He installed Fumes – Animated Persistent Fuel, a mod from GTA5-Mods whose sales pitch reads like it was written specifically to antagonize anyone who thinks fuel is a chore:
“Every vanilla and online vehicle carries a real fuel tank. It empties as you drive and it is still empty when you come back to that car tomorrow.”
Persistent fuel. Across sessions. Your getaway car remembers it ran dry yesterday. And refuelling is deliberately physical: “Refuelling is not a menu,” the mod’s description continues — casting subtle shade at every game that treats a petrol stop as a button prompt — “Get out, walk to the pump, take the nozzle off it—it goes in your hand and the hose comes with you on a real physics rope.”
In practice, a new fuel meter appears on your minimap while driving. Run the tank dry and your journey is over. As Wolens puts it: “You know, like how cars work.”

The Testing Did Not Go Smoothly
If you’ve been following the series, you’ll know Wolens’ copy of GTA 5 is no longer really GTA 5 — it’s “a nightmare merry-go-round of frictionless cars and increasingly contradictory mods.” Simply acquiring a test vehicle meant figuring out how to make a car stop in a Los Santos overrun by hitmen and ambient gang violence. He reports that throwing himself under a car’s wheels didn’t help: the driver would politely get out to ask if he was okay, while the car itself kept rolling into the distance.
His solution was to teleport into a vehicle — Franklin can teleport now, thanks to an earlier entry in this saga — and pilot it to a petrol station to test the mod’s in-person pump mechanics. The good news: the fuel system worked, tracking his tank and presenting a proper pump interaction even as his other mods threw errors around it. The bad news: the moment he stepped out at the pump, his frictionless-physics installation sent the car gliding away without him. His entire review of the moment, in the article’s own words: “Never mind.”
It’s a perfect little parable for the whole exercise. The dream of playing proto-GTA 6 today keeps colliding with the reality that GTA 5 was never built to be a fuel simulator — and the community keeps doing it anyway.
Why Fuel Is the Mechanic Nobody Can Stop Arguing About
Fuel occupies a strange spot in GTA 6’s pre-release story. Rockstar has never put it in a trailer or a press release. It first surfaced in the summer’s leaked gameplay — most famously the clip the community literally titled the “GTA 6 Gas Leak,” in which Jason refuels and repairs his car at a Leonida gas station, robs the place, picks up wanted stars, and discovers the stolen car may have a tracker on it. Gas stations with explicit “Refuel” and “Repair” options, set against an early-morning Grassrivers backdrop, became one of the most replayed moments of the entire leak cycle — and prompted exactly the debate you’d expect about whether refilling is immersive or just friction, as AV Club noted at the time.
Then the leaks got backup. Hands-on preview reports say refueling is genuinely in the game: gasoline cars visit the pump, electric cars recharge, and gas stations double as repair spots. Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson has even addressed the divisiveness head-on, telling Famitsu that Rockstar is “always trying to find the right balance between realism and ease of play” and wants to “give meaning to each action” — the same design philosophy that saved the gas gauge while the fridge got cut. We broke down that whole saga, including why fuel made the cut, in our story on Rockstar’s realism line.
So the modding community isn’t chasing a rumor anymore. It’s rehearsing a mechanic that preview reports say is really coming on November 19 — it just hasn’t been stamped official yet. That distinction is exactly the vacuum projects like Wolens’ fill.

What This Means for GTA 6
First, the direction of travel is unmistakable. The Netflix-streamed extended look that out-watched everything on the platform leaned hard into simulation-flavored detail — law enforcement that meticulously documents your physical appearance until changing your look becomes the escape plan (that’s the Criminal Profile system we covered here), plus protagonists who feel the effects of sleeplessness and a bad diet. Fuel is the road-trip version of the same idea: the world pushes back, and managing it is the game.
Second, fuel is a strategy layer, not a chore — at least if the preview reports hold. An empty gauge mid-getaway is a self-inflicted mission failure, which means the pre-heist checklist of 2026 includes “full tank.” That’s the “meaning” Nelson says every action is supposed to carry.
And third — the part Wolens’ project accidentally proves — the wait itself has become content. With GTA 6 confirmed for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S and no PC date announced (Rockstar history suggests a longer wait there), the PC modding scene is doing what it always does: building the future by hand inside the last game. Rockstar, for its part, has started embracing that scene officially — NoPixel V’s roleplay server just got the corporate blessing. A fuel mod isn’t an official GTA 6 preview, but it’s a decent rehearsal.
If all this pumped you up for the real thing (sorry), our GTA 6 pre-order guide breaks down both editions and every bonus — and if you need to feel that fuel gauge in your hands before fall, GTA 5 on PS5 still runs beautifully, mods optional.
