Rockstar Reportedly Confirms: GTA 6 Fans Really Did Measure Oxygen Levels Outside Its HQ
Of every wild GTA 6 rumor that has circulated since the game was announced — fake maps, fake release dates, fake leaks by the dozen — few seemed less believable than the superfan who claimed to be measuring the oxygen levels outside Rockstar’s headquarters to predict when the next trailer would drop. It sounded like a shitpost. It was not. According to an Italian YouTuber who visited Rockstar’s offices, developers told him the oxygen guy was real.
In a video packed with anecdotes from his studio visit, creator Mike ShowSha — one of the lucky few invited to see Grand Theft Auto 6 in person ahead of Rockstar’s big Netflix showcase — revealed that employees confirmed fans had genuinely been surveilling the air around their workplace in anticipation of a new trailer. The studio, it turns out, knew all about it.

What Happened
Mike ShowSha was among the group of content creators flown in to tour Rockstar ahead of the release of Grand Theft Auto 6: An Extended Look, the 27-minute deep dive that premiered on Netflix and promptly out-watched every movie and show on the platform. In an August 28 video recounting the trip, he dropped the detail that stopped everyone scrolling: Rockstar staff told him fans had literally been measuring oxygen levels around the campus.
“Guys, I’ve been told some weird things,” ShowSha said, via machine translation. “Like, there are people who measure oxygen levels — I don’t know how they do it, but they told me this at Rockstar, so I’d tend to believe them, because if there’s a sign that suggests there are more people inside the studios, it means development has increased, and therefore it’s about to happen. It’s crazy.”
To be clear on attribution: Rockstar has not publicly confirmed anything, and no official statement exists. This is ShowSha’s account of what developers told him behind closed doors. But it is the closest thing to official acknowledgment the oxygen saga has ever gotten — and the fact that devs were apparently laughing about it with visitors says a lot about how aware the studio is of its own fandom.
The Original “Investigation,” Recapped
If you missed this chapter of the hype cycle, here is what happened. Back in June, a Reddit user went viral after posting what they described as an extensive field study of Rockstar North’s Edinburgh campus — conducted from the bushes outside. Their methodology, documented by Tom’s Hardware and HotHardware at the time, included oxygen concentration monitors, acoustic recording equipment pointed at the building, daily counts of cars in the parking lot, and even a census of discarded cigarette butts.
The reasoning went like this: if oxygen levels around the building dropped, more people must be inside breathing it, meaning staff levels were up, meaning crunch was happening, meaning a new trailer was imminent. The fan reported oxygen readings dipping to around 20.3% and 20.04% after 5 PM and concluded that late-night activity at the studio had spiked. At one point they claimed to have counted 71 cigarette butts over 19 hours against a consumer average of around 15 — “stress levels are clearly high,” they wrote.
Some of the acoustic equipment was reportedly confiscated. That did not stop the surveillance, which continued in various forms as the community hunted for any signal that Trailer 3 was close. IGN’s report on ShowSha’s comments notes that the same fan camped outside the campus monitoring employee traffic in and out — a level of dedication that the internet greeted with a mix of amusement and genuine concern.

Why Fans Are This Desperate
Context matters here. Rockstar’s marketing cadence has been a slow drip by design: Trailer 2 arrived in May 2025, and then the studio went nearly silent for the better part of a year before the Extended Look landed on Netflix this August. In the void between official drops, the community turned to forensics. If Rockstar would not tell fans when the next reveal was coming, fans would derive it from parking-lot telemetry and atmospheric data.
It is genuinely unprecedented hype. The Extended Look drew 31.1 million views in its first days. Anticipation for launch day is already wiping out PS5 Pro stock and inflating scalper prices. The preview even started collecting user reviews on Letterboxd, because of course a 27-minute game preview now competes with films as an entertainment event. When demand is that ferocious, someone was always going to end up in the bushes with an oxygen sensor.
Even Rockstar feels the weight of it. In the same press cycle that produced ShowSha’s studio visit, reporting indicated the developer is “nervous” about the pressure surrounding GTA 6 — a reminder that on the other side of those monitored walls are thousands of people trying to ship the biggest entertainment product ever made.
What This Means for GTA 6
Honestly? Not much for the game itself — and that is fine. Oxygen readings are not a trailer predictor, and nothing in ShowSha’s anecdote hints at a date for the next official drop. GTA 6 remains locked in for November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and everything we have learned about the game lately has come from the studio’s own showcases and press tour, not from air samples in Edinburgh.
What the story does tell us is how Rockstar is handling the mania: with apparent good humor. Developers reportedly joked about the oxygen superfan to visiting creators, the same tour that surfaced details like a random event that surprised even Rockstar’s own testers and the story reasons behind Jason and Lucia’s switching restrictions. For a studio famous for secrecy, letting creators peek behind the curtain — and laughing about the fandom’s detective work while doing it — is a strikingly relaxed posture for the final stretch.
There is also a delicious irony that fans have mostly already pointed out: GTA 6 is a game about obsessively watching people in Vice City, and its most dedicated fans have spent 2026 obsessively watching Rockstar. Jason and Lucia have their binoculars; the community has its gas sensors.

The Bottom Line
The oxygen superfan was real, Rockstar apparently knows about it, and the launch is now just over eleven weeks away. If the hype has you checking air quality outside Edinburgh, maybe channel that energy into something useful: our GTA 6 pre-order guide breaks down every edition and bonus, or you can check GTA 6 on Amazon while pre-order perks last.
