PC Gamer Is Modding GTA 5 Into “GTA 6” One Day at a Time — Today, It Became a Golf Sim
With GTA 6 exactly two months away, one writer at PC Gamer has committed to a strange and wonderful vigil: modding Grand Theft Auto 5 every single day until it either becomes a PC version of GTA 6 or breaks entirely. The latest installment of the experiment turned Los Santos into a golf simulator — fireballs included — and it says something honest about why we’re all so hungry for November 19.
The series, written by PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens, is a running diary of bolting mods onto GTA 5’s “sagging frame” in pursuit of the Vice City feel PC players can’t officially have yet — because GTA 6 launches on console only. It’s funny, it’s unhinged, and it’s also a time capsule of the wait we’re all living through.
What Happened: Street Golf Is Here
The newest entry in the series introduces the Street Golf mod, and Wolens’s grievance is genuinely charming: GTA 5 lets you play golf, but only at “officially designated golf courses, which are prisons for the soul.” The fix, naturally, was a mod that lets you play golf in the street.
And this is no throwaway script. Street Golf arrives with a suite of tweakable menus, golf stats, and — in Wolens’s words — potent ball types. Normal balls? Yes. Fire balls? Absolutely. Detonating balls? “Very much so.” And super balls, which can be set to travel about 200 times further than anything else in your arsenal.
Naturally, he immediately weaponized the mod against his own entourage. Wolens has been traveling Los Santos with a bodyguard from a previous installment — one who is “instantly replaced by an almost-identical bodyguard whenever he happens to get pancaked by a flying car or assassinated by a squad of mercenaries.” So he used the man as “a kind of ambulatory mini-golf windmill,” alternating between sending him cartwheeling down the street, sending him cartwheeling further down the street (super ball), or setting him on fire. The mod even procced an achievement when he nailed his bodyguard “in the dome with a maximum-power shot.” The detonating balls, tragically, never quite worked.

The Series So Far: Business Empires, Fame, and Now Sports
Street Golf is the third mod in the experiment, and the escalation is the point. Day one brought the LifeInvader Business Mod, turning Wolens into Los Santos’s answer to a social-network billionaire. Day two added Become A Celebrity, a mod he found “almost weirdly fully-featured.” Day three: golf. The bodyguard (and his endless stream of identical replacements) is a carry-over character from those earlier installments — a little lore for the saga.
The whole project has a stated finish line that doubles as its punchline: keep modding daily “until it becomes GTA 6 or breaks entirely.” New entries promise to keep coming daily, so the golf era is almost certainly already over by the time you read this.
Why This Is the Most Relatable GTA 6 Story of the Week
Strip away the fireballs and this is a story about the strange energy of the final stretch before a once-in-a-decade launch. GTA 6 arrives November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S — and PC players, who won’t be at the party on day one, are coping in the most PC-gamer way imaginable: by rebuilding the old game into something new. The mod that lets you whack exploding golf balls down a Los Santos boulevard is a love letter written out of impatience.
It’s also a reminder of what modding has meant to this franchise’s long tail. GTA 5’s PC version kept the game alive for more than a decade — roleplay servers, graphics overhauls, total conversions — to the point that millions still play it today. Take-Two’s own boss admitted this week that PC is “becoming more and more important” to the company; the modders arguably proved that thesis years before any executive said it out loud.

And the urge runs deeper than golf. Around the same time this experiment began, another corner of the community was busy backporting GTA 6’s fuel system into GTA 5 — the same impulse, applied to car physics instead of fairways. When the official thing is this close and still out of reach, players build their own version of it. Every time.
A Childhood by the Riverbed, Rebuilt in Los Santos
The best detail in the whole piece is why golf, of all things. Wolens opens with a confession: he grew up by a dry riverbed, and a big empty riverbed, he writes, is good for exactly three things — setting fires, firing air rifles, and walloping golf balls into orbit. “Some say they never stopped travelling. They’re still out there, somewhere, in the space between the stars.”
GTA 5, in his telling, fails that test: you can play golf, but only at the designated course — an institutional, fenced-in version of a fundamentally lawless joy. Street Golf is the fix. It’s a tiny grievance elevated with total sincerity, and that’s exactly the register the whole series operates in. The joke isn’t that the mods are absurd; it’s that a 13-year-old game still has enough machinery under the hood to absorb any absurdity you throw at it — business empires, fame systems, full golf physics with four ball types and stat tracking.
His verdict on day three: it’s a pleasant distraction. “Whenever the travails of my life in Los Santos get too much I can, at any moment, drop into Golf Mode. Would that real life were the same way.” Two months from the real thing, a lot of us know the feeling.
What This Means for GTA 6
First: the wait has become content. When the gap before launch is big enough that journalists are turning it into a daily modding diary, you understand the scale of anticipation we’re living in. Two months out, GTA 6 isn’t just a game — it’s the thing everyone is performing their impatience around.
Second: the modding future is already guaranteed. The day a GTA 6 PC version lands — whenever that is — it inherits one of the most creative communities in gaming. If people will turn GTA 5 into a golf sim to pass the time, imagine what they’ll do with a brand-new Leonida.
Third: the classics are the bridge. GTA 5 remains one of the best ways to scratch the itch before November — and if you’ve never taken the detour, our guide to every GTA game and where to play it covers the whole catalog, including plenty of other ways to survive the wait.
