GTA 6’s File Size Is Still a Mystery — and Gamers Are Guessing Everywhere From 150GB to 300GB
We are under two months from GTA 6 launching on November 19, 2026, and by now you would think every major fact about the biggest game ever made would be public. Release date: locked. Platforms: PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, confirmed. Hell, we have even had an extended gameplay overview thanks to the Rockstar–Netflix collaboration. And yet one genuinely important number is still a complete unknown: how many gigabytes of your hard drive GTA 6 is going to eat.
Rockstar has not confirmed a file size. No storefront shows a final install figure. So with launch closing in, fans are doing what fans do — guessing out loud, at each other, with increasing volume. A thread on the GTA 6 subreddit asking people to predict the game’s install size has pulled more than a hundred comments, and as ScreenRant reports, the answers range from “manageable” to “clear your entire SSD.”
What Happened
It started with a simple question posted to r/GTA6unmoderated: “If you were to guess the file size of GTA 6, what do you think is realistic for the game?” The original poster went first, throwing out a band of 220GB to 296GB — and the thread exploded from there.
The replies split into camps fast. The pessimists pointed at ARK: Survival Evolved, which ballooned past 320GB with all its DLC, as the nightmare scenario. The moderates landed around 150–180GB, with one of the most-upvoted takes noting that the number only tells day one’s story: “It’s definitely going to expand over time when Online and more content gets added.” Others scattered anywhere from 184GB to 250GB.
And then there is the optimist camp — smaller, but making a real argument. “Optimization includes file size,” one user wrote. “That paired with the PS5 SSD, and it will probably be less than we’re expecting.” Their evidence? History: GTA 5 launched on PC at roughly 60GB back in 2015. A decade of Online updates later, it sits somewhere around 100–120GB. Rockstar games grow — but they do not start absurd.
To be crystal clear, because some headlines are fuzzier about this than they should be: none of these numbers are official. They are guesses. Educated, well-argued guesses in some cases — but until Rockstar or a storefront listing says otherwise, every figure floating around is fan speculation.

Why Everyone Is Bracing for a Monster
The anxiety is not random. Every credible signal about GTA 6 points at “biggest game ever made.” The map is reportedly twice the size of GTA 5’s and roughly three times the size of Red Dead Redemption 2’s — and that is before you factor in the 600,000+ animations, the dynamic score, the “next evolution of in-game radio,” and whatever GTA 6 Online becomes after launch. All of that data lives on your drive.
For calibration: Red Dead Redemption 2 installs at around 120GB today, and Starfield — this generation’s other “huge RPG” benchmark — runs 125–140GB. GamesRadar’s own conservative estimate puts GTA 6 at least 120–130GB, and notes a since-deleted 2024 claim from GTA 6 Intel of just under 200GB. Mashable, surveying the same Reddit noise, pegs the speculation band at 100–250GB. The Times of India’s esports desk goes further: 150–200GB at launch plus a 30–50GB day-one patch, which lands you at 200–250GB of real-world footprint.
There is one more wrinkle making the storage question universal this time: GTA 6 is digital-only in practice. Yes, there is a physical box — but it contains a download code, not a disc. There is no version of launch day where a chunk of players sidesteps the download. Every single person playing on November 19 is pulling the same payload over the same internet, and pre-load access is expected roughly a week before launch. That is the moment the truth comes out.
A word on the Call of Duty comparisons making the rounds: Black Ops 6’s ~300GB install gets cited as proof that 200GB+ is the new normal, but as Mashable notes, that figure is inflated — a single CoD install bundles campaign, multiplayer, and Warzone into one monster. GTA 6 will not be three games in a trench coat. It will just be one enormous game.
The Console Math Nobody Wants to Do
Here is where the guessing game stops being fun. A launch PS5 carries an 825GB SSD, of which roughly 670GB is usable after the system takes its cut. Xbox Series X gives you about 800GB of a nominal 1TB. If the 200GB camp is right, GTA 6’s day-one install would claim close to a third of a PS5 drive — before a single patch, before GTA 6 Online exists, before the file bloats the way GTA 5’s did over ten years.
And then there is the poor Xbox Series S. Its 512GB SSD leaves around 364GB usable. A 200GB GTA 6 means Series S owners would be handing over more than half their console to one game — a genuine one-game-plus-two situation for anyone with a library. The advice from the Times of India’s breakdown: keep at least 220GB free to install smoothly. Honestly, if you can swing more, do. Future-you, three Online updates deep, will be grateful.
The good news for PS5 owners especially: the SSD is upgradeable, and it is a five-minute job with a screwdriver. We keep a constantly updated rundown of the drives worth buying in our best PS5 SSDs for GTA 6 guide — prices have been falling all year, and the timing has never been better to add a terabyte before Leonida arrives. Xbox players are stuck with proprietary expansion cards, which sting a little more per gigabyte.

What This Means for GTA 6
1. Launch week becomes a storage-management minigame. The pre-load window is when Rockstar finally shows its hand. Expect console storage discourse to dominate gaming feeds that week even harder than it is now — and expect a lot of “what should I delete” posts from people who ignored the warning signs.
2. Day one size is the floor, not the ceiling. The GTA 5 trajectory — 60GB at launch to 100–120GB today — is the single most instructive data point anyone has. Whatever GTA 6 weighs on November 19, plan for it to double over the game’s life. Buy storage for the game GTA 6 will become in 2029, not the one it is on day one.
3. The Series S is the canary. If install sizes land at the top of the speculation band, the little white Xbox becomes a one-big-game-at-a-time console for GTA 6 players. It still plays the game — but the storage ceiling is real, and this thread is a preview of the grumbling.
4. The optimists might still win. Rockstar has historically shipped tighter files than the Activision arms race — RDR2’s install was reasonable for its scope in 2018, and the PS5’s compression and SSD streaming are genuinely better tools than anything Rockstar had last generation. “Less than we expect” is a real possibility. But “less than expected” and “small” are very different things.
The Countdown Math
However it shakes out, the reveal is close. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — confirmed, locked, and now under sixty days away. Pre-load should open about a week out, which is when the file size stops being a guessing game and starts being a to-do list. If you want to walk in prepared, pre-order GTA 6 for PS5 on Amazon or grab the Xbox Series X|S version here — and while you are at it, check that your console has the room. November you will thank September you.
