Rockstar’s GTA 6 Research Included Strip Clubs, Night Rides With Ex-Cops, and a Decade of Florida Fieldwork

Somewhere in Edinburgh, there is an expense report that will never be declassified. Rockstar has confirmed — on the record — that its developers spent years doing field research in Florida ahead of GTA 6, and the line items are exactly what you’d expect from the studio rebuilding modern Vice City: riding around Miami at night with ex-cops, visits to strip clubs and nightclubs, beach days, hours deep in the Everglades, and trips all the way down to the Keys. All of it, ostensibly, in the name of authenticity.

The confirmation comes from Rupert Humphries, Rockstar’s senior vice president of narrative, in an interview with Game Informer’s monster GTA 6 cover feature — the same 14-page package that has already given us the full Leonida map, the side-activity list, and the hurricane confirmation. IGN flagged the best quote today, and it’s been making the rounds since.

What Happened: The Research Trip List Is Official

Asked how Rockstar captures a state as unhinged as Florida, Humphries didn’t reach for mood boards or reference decks. He described an entire program of first-hand immersion:

“We go and try to experience everything… from riding around areas at night with ex-cops, to going to strip clubs and nightclubs, spending time on the beach, in the Everglades, down in the Keys, and beyond,” Humphries told Game Informer. The team has taken “a multitude” of such trips over the years, per the feature — the same piece fans crashed Game Informer’s app to read when the digital issue went live earlier this week.

He also offered the quieter quote that explains why any of this matters. “We don’t have time to take you everywhere, but we want you to be able to explore and get a feel for most of the places, cultures, and vibes,” Humphries said. “This game and its stories really thrive in an environment where you have rich people and poor people right next door to each other. And crime and corruption is the thread that pulls everyone together.”

That’s not a tourism pitch. That’s a world-design thesis — and it’s backed by an amount of fieldwork most studios would never budget for.

This Isn’t a Stunt — It’s a Decade-Long Program

If the strip club detail reads like a headline writers’ gift, the broader picture is considerably more serious. In a recent Dazed magazine interview with Rockstar leadership (covered by TweakTown and others), the studio described a dedicated research team embedded in Miami, with staff visiting the city and its surroundings for the better part of a decade — sitting down with former criminals, police officers, club promoters and, yes, gun dealers to understand the state from the inside rather than through the internet’s meme-colored glasses.

That effort runs through every department. “That firsthand context helped us understand the visual markers and nuances that define the identities we wanted to represent,” senior art director for characters Jamie-Lee Lloyd told Dazed, “while filtering them through the unique lens of GTA and the stories we wanted to tell.” The studio reportedly worked with Miami stylist Jillian Carr on an in-game fashion ecosystem, and Humphries has talked about building the soundtrack’s DNA out of Miami bass and modern Florida artists like Kodak Black and Sexyy Red — a throughline you can already hear in the extended look’s tracklist.

There’s also a practical reason the homework had to be redone from scratch: the last GTA set in Vice City was 2006’s Vice City Stories. Twenty years later, GTA 6’s Leonida is a present-day Florida — smartphones, influencer culture, viral Florida Man chaos and all. The state Rockstar memorably faked from VHS-era reference in the 2000s now had to be rebuilt from lived observation. (GamesRadar’s take, for what it’s worth: spare a thought for the Edinburgh-based developers who apparently endured all that Florida sunshine as a work activity.)

The Strip Club Elephant in the Room

IGN’s coverage also addresses the obvious follow-up: strip clubs themselves. A high-profile GTA 6 gameplay leak previously showed strip club interiors alongside a nudist colony populated by fully unclothed characters — though it’s worth stressing, as IGN does, that this was unofficial leaked footage, not marketing material. Rockstar has not released any official strip club gameplay, and may well choose not to before launch; the studio has spent recent weeks aggressively taking leak material down across the internet.

None of this is exactly a shock. Strip clubs have been a series staple since the 3D era, even when they weren’t fully explorable. What’s new is the confirmation that the 2026 versions were researched the way a documentary crew would research them — in person, at night, with former police officers along for the ride. It explains the Mature rating before it explains anything else about the game.

What This Means for GTA 6

First: the research is already visible in the confirmed feature list. Those Everglades hours? They map straight onto Grassrivers and the air boating and kayaking activities Rockstar has confirmed. The Keys trips show up as the Leonida Keys region on the official six-region map, which is twice the size of GTA 5’s. The beach days and nightclub visits underpin the beach and club gameplay we’ve already seen. Even the hurricane and tropical storm simulation fits the pattern — you don’t ship Florida weather like that without having stood in it.

Second: Humphries’ “rich people and poor people right next door to each other” line is the clearest statement yet of what Leonida is actually for. GTA has always been a class satire with cars; this time the satire is being built from interviews and observation rather than recycled clichés — which lines up with what Rockstar has said about being careful with real-world targets. The crime thread he describes is also, notably, the thread that ties Jason and Lucia’s story to the world around them.

And third: it’s a reminder of the scale of the bet. The most expensive entertainment product in history is launching into a post-lockdown games industry that is risk-averse, sequel-driven and allergic to new ideas — and Rockstar’s answer was to send its narrative leadership out on night rides with ex-cops. Whether that obsession translates into the leap fans expect, we find out in 50 days and change: the countdown milestone passed this week. If you’re killing time until then, we have a few ideas — and you’ll want your copy locked in before November: pre-order GTA 6 for PS5 on Amazon or grab the Xbox Series X|S version here. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — presumably without an expense-report DLC.
