Partner / Traitor · Original Vice City (1986)
Lance Vance
The partner who sold out. Vice City’s Judas.
I told you, I’m a businessman. And business has been good lately.
Who They Were
Lance Vance is Tommy Vercetti’s partner-turned-traitor — the man who had everything and threw it all away because he couldn’t handle not being the boss. Voiced by Philip Michael Thomas (of Miami Vice fame), Lance is one of the most complex and controversial characters in GTA history.
Lance enters the story through tragedy. He and his brother Victor Vance were running a drug deal — the same deal that Tommy was sent to facilitate. The deal was ambushed. Victor was killed. Lance survived, and he wanted answers just as badly as Tommy did. The two formed a partnership — Lance had street connections and knowledge of the Vice City underworld, Tommy had the muscle and the will.
Together, they infiltrated Ricardo Diaz’s operation, working for the paranoid drug lord while plotting to take him down. After they killed Diaz and seized his mansion, the partnership started to crack. Lance felt like a junior partner — he wanted equal say, equal respect, equal power. Tommy treated him like a subordinate. Lance started making mistakes, getting sloppy, and feeling increasingly sidelined.
Sonny Forelli saw the fracture and exploited it. Lance — hurt, ego-bruised, and greedy — turned informant. In the finale, Lance reveals Tommy’s plan to pay Sonny with counterfeit cash, and the mansion is overrun with Forelli soldiers. Tommy hunts Lance to the rooftop of the estate and kills him. The last thing Lance sees is Tommy’s gun.
Legacy
Lance Vance is GTA’s most infamous betrayal. Every GTA player who experienced Vice City remembers the moment they realized Lance had turned. The rooftop fight isn’t just a boss battle — it’s the death of a friendship. And it hits because Lance isn’t pure evil. He’s wounded, insecure, and resentful. He’s the friend who couldn’t handle your success.
Philip Michael Thomas — Tubbs from Miami Vice — brought star power and charisma to the role. The casting was a love letter to the show that inspired Vice City’s entire aesthetic.
Could They Return in GTA 6?
Lance is dead — killed by Tommy on the rooftop of the Vercetti Estate in 1986. But the Vance name lives on. His brother Victor was the protagonist of Vice City Stories (set in 1984), and the Vance Crime Family was a significant force in the 1980s Vice City drug trade.
- A character with the surname “Vance” appearing in GTA 6 would be instant fan pandemonium — a descendant of the Vance crime family.
- The Vance family’s drug trade roots could be referenced in modern Vice City’s criminal underworld.
- Lance’s betrayal of Tommy could be referenced as a legendary cautionary tale in Leonida’s criminal community.
- The dynamic between Jason and Lucia in GTA 6 — a couple relying on each other — directly mirrors Tommy and Lance, but with a romantic bond instead of a business one. Will history repeat?
