Avery Carrington

Texas property mogul. He builds his empire with dynamite and intimidation.

Real estate is the future, Tommy. You buy land, you sit on it, and you make money while you sleep. But sometimes… you gotta help things along.

Who They Were

Avery Carrington is a ruthless Texas real estate developer who hires Tommy for some of Vice City’s most memorable early missions. He’s a caricature of aggressive American capitalism — a loud, confident man in a cowboy hat who believes property development is a blood sport.

Avery’s missions are all about clearing the way for development — and “clearing” means violence. He has Tommy destroy competing businesses, intimidate property owners into selling, and demolish buildings that are in the way of his projects. One mission involves planting a bomb in a demolition van and leveling a construction site. Another has Tommy causing a riot at a funeral to drive down property values.

Avery introduces Tommy to the legitimate side of Vice City’s corruption — the world where businessmen use hired guns instead of lawyers, and where a demolition crew can be a weapon. He’s the one who steers Tommy toward property acquisition, planting the seed that grows into the Vercetti empire.

In the broader GTA timeline, Avery appears in GTA: Liberty City Stories (set in 1998), where he’s killed by Toni Cipriani on orders from Salvatore Leone. His death is a footnote in the larger saga, but his influence on Vice City’s skyline — and on Tommy’s approach to empire-building — is permanent.

Legacy

Avery Carrington is peak Vice City satire — a walking critique of Florida real estate development, where wetlands are drained, neighborhoods are gentrified, and anything can be bought if you have enough money and enough muscle. In 2026, this satire hits even harder.

He’s also the character who teaches Tommy the value of owning things — not just doing jobs for other people, but acquiring assets. Without Avery’s influence, there might not be a Vercetti empire.

Could They Return in GTA 6?

Avery is dead (killed in GTA: Liberty City Stories, set in 1998). But his real estate empire is the perfect GTA 6 connection:

  • Carrington Properties or Carrington Development Corp could be a major developer in modern Vice City — their logo on buildings and construction sites.
  • The concept of property development through violence is more relevant than ever. Florida real estate is still a blood sport.
  • Boobie Ike — the GTA 6 character who turned street money into a legitimate empire (real estate, strip clubs, recording studios) — is a direct spiritual successor to Avery.
  • Construction sites in Vice City could reference Avery-era developments from the ’80s.

Trivia

  • Voiced by Burt Reynolds — yes, that Burt Reynolds.
  • Avery’s missions teach the player about Vice City’s property acquisition system — the foundation of Tommy’s empire.
  • His ‘riot at a funeral’ mission is one of the most chaotic and beloved early-game missions.
  • Appears in GTA: Liberty City Stories where he’s killed by Toni Cipriani.
  • The character satirizes aggressive Florida real estate development — still relevant 40 years later.
