Ocean Beach (Classic VC)
Overview
Ocean Beach is the iconic beachfront area of the original Vice City — the ’80s version of South Beach with pastel art deco hotels, neon lights, and the kind of sunset that makes you forget you’re a criminal on the run.
This is where Vice City began for many players. The first time you drive along the beachfront with V-Rock blasting, the sun setting over the ocean, and a stolen Sentinel under you — that’s the Vice City experience in its purest form.
In the Game
In the original Vice City, Ocean Beach was home to the Ocean View Hotel (Tommy’s first safehouse), the marina, and the beachfront strip. It was the starting area, the tutorial zone, and the first impression of Vice City’s unique aesthetic.
Key locations: Ocean View Hotel (starting safehouse), Washington Street Mall, the beach, and the marina where many boat missions began.
Then vs Now
Ocean Beach in 1986 was a place of new money — cocaine cowboys building hotels, buying yachts, living large. In GTA 6’s modern Vice City, the equivalent area has aged. The art deco is preserved but the money has moved on to newer, flashier neighborhoods.
Real-World Inspiration
Based on South Beach’s Art Deco District — the largest collection of Art Deco architecture in the world, with over 800 preserved buildings from the 1920s-40s.
The pastel color scheme of the Art Deco buildings became Vice City’s visual signature.
Ocean Drive in Miami was the primary filming location for Miami Vice.
Trivia
- Ocean View Hotel was Tommy Vercetti’s first safehouse in Vice City.
- The art deco aesthetic became Vice City’s defining visual identity.
