Ricardo Diaz

The paranoid drug kingpin who owned Vice City — until Tommy took it all.

I LIKE THIS MOVIE! WHAT IS THIS MOVIE?! …I want to make a movie like this.

Who They Were

Ricardo Diaz is the Colombian drug kingpin who runs Vice City’s narcotics trade — and the man who ordered the ambush that kicked off the entire story. Short-tempered, eccentric, and obscenely wealthy, Diaz is Vice City’s version of a Tony Montana figure, right down to the mansion and the paranoia.

When Tommy and Lance infiltrate Diaz’s operation seeking revenge, they find a boss who is equal parts terrifying and ridiculous. Diaz screams at subordinates, shoots his own TV when he doesn’t like what’s on, throws parties that last for days, and surrounds himself with armed guards at all times. He’s the kind of man who’ll execute someone for a minor infraction, then offer you a sandwich.

Tommy and Lance work their way into Diaz’s inner circle, doing jobs and gaining his trust. Diaz likes Tommy — sees him as competent and reliable. But the whole time, Tommy and Lance are planning the takeover. When they finally strike, they storm the mansion in a massive firefight, chasing Diaz through his own home. Cornered and dying, Diaz’s last words are pure hubris: “I trusted you, Tommy! I would have given you half!”

Tommy kills Diaz, takes his mansion, and claims his empire. The Vercetti Estate — the iconic Starfish Island mansion that serves as Tommy’s base for the rest of the game — was Ricardo Diaz’s home first. Every time you save your game there, you’re standing in a dead man’s house.

Legacy

Diaz is the Scarface figure of Vice City — unhinged, powerful, and doomed. Voiced by Luis Guzmán, his performance walks the perfect line between terrifying and hilarious. You laugh at Diaz’s outbursts, but you never forget he’s a mass murderer.

The Diaz Cartel established the template for drug kingpin antagonists in GTA — a template that GTA 6’s Raul Bautista may well follow. His mansion — the prize that Tommy seizes — became one of the most iconic locations in gaming.

Could They Return in GTA 6?

Diaz is dead — killed by Tommy and Lance in 1986. But his legacy is massive:

  • The Diaz Cartel could have evolved or been absorbed into modern Leonida’s drug trade infrastructure.
  • The former Diaz mansion (now Vercetti Estate) could be a landmark or mission location in GTA 6.
  • Raul Bautista — a confirmed GTA 6 character — fills the same archetype: an established criminal power player in Leonida.
  • Modern drug operations in Leonida could trace their roots back to the Diaz era — references to “the old Colombian networks.”

Trivia

  • Voiced by Luis Guzmán (Boogie Nights, Traffic, Carlito’s Way).
  • The mansion Tommy takes from Diaz is a direct homage to Tony Montana’s mansion in Scarface.
  • Diaz’s paranoid behavior — shooting TVs, screaming at staff — mirrors Montana’s descent in Scarface.
  • His famous line ‘I would have given you half!’ is one of the most quoted lines in GTA history.
  • The mission ‘Rub Out’ — where Tommy and Lance assault the mansion — is considered a top-5 GTA mission of all time.

Status: Deceased — killed by Tommy Vercetti and Lance Vance in 1986 | Voice Actor: Luis Guzmán
