Protagonist · Original Vice City (1986)
Tommy Vercetti
The Harwood Butcher. He built an empire from nothing.
I just want to know what the hell is going on here, okay? I mean, I’ve been in prison for fifteen years. You send me out to do a deal, and it goes sour. I want my money back.
Who They Were
Tommy Vercetti is the protagonist of Grand Theft Auto: Vice City (2002) — the first speaking protagonist in GTA history, and still widely considered the greatest. Voiced by the legendary Ray Liotta, Tommy brought cinematic weight to video game storytelling that the industry hadn’t seen before.
A former soldier in the Forelli Crime Family of Liberty City, Tommy was sent to prison in 1971 after being set up in the infamous Harwood massacre — eleven men dead, earning him the nickname “The Harwood Butcher.” He kept his mouth shut for fifteen years. When he was finally released in 1986, his boss Sonny Forelli shipped him down to Vice City to set up a drug operation, hoping to get him out of the way.
The deal went bad. Ambushed. Money gone, drugs gone, and Tommy left standing in a dark alley with nothing but questions. Instead of running back to Liberty City with his tail between his legs, Tommy did what no one expected: he stayed. He built connections, took out rivals, acquired property after property, and gradually constructed a criminal empire that spanned the entire city.
By the end of the game, Tommy owns Vice City. He kills Ricardo Diaz and takes his mansion on Starfish Island. He eliminates the traitor Lance Vance. And in a final bloody showdown, he guns down Sonny Forelli himself — the man who set him up fifteen years ago. Tommy Vercetti went from ex-con to king. Nobody gave him anything. He took it all.
Legacy
Tommy Vercetti is the defining protagonist of the 3D GTA era. He’s directly inspired by Tony Montana from Scarface — the mansion, the empire, the paranoia, the betrayal. But Ray Liotta’s performance gave Tommy a cold, pragmatic intelligence that made him feel distinct. He wasn’t a hot-headed drug lord. He was a businessman who happened to be lethal.
The character cemented Vice City as GTA’s most iconic setting. When fans think of Vice City, they think of Tommy in his pastel suit, standing on the steps of the Vercetti Estate. For over two decades, the question has been the same: where is Tommy Vercetti now?
Could They Return in GTA 6?
This is the #1 fan theory heading into GTA 6. Tommy Vercetti would be approximately 75-78 years old in the modern-day setting. Here’s why a return — or at least a reference — is highly likely:
- The Vercetti Gang could be an established faction in modern Vice City, even if Tommy himself doesn’t appear on-screen.
- The Vercetti Estate on Starfish Island (Star Island equivalent) could be a landmark or mission location.
- Characters could mention “the old days” and reference Tommy by reputation without him appearing — similar to how GTA V referenced past characters.
- Ray Liotta sadly passed away in 2022, making a full voiced return impossible. However, Rockstar could reference Tommy through photos, in-universe lore, or NPC dialogue.
- The Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus — with its ’80s aesthetic — is a direct callback to Tommy’s era. This suggests Rockstar is leaning into the nostalgia.
Speculation: Tommy is alive but retired, living in seclusion. His empire has been taken over or evolved into a modern organization. Jason and Lucia may cross paths with his legacy without ever meeting the man himself.
