GTA 6 NEWS · NOVEMBER 19 RIVAL
Devolver Finally Reveals Its GTA 6 “Competitor” — a $5 Remaster of a Game That Never Existed
While the entire gaming industry treats November 19 like a hurricane making landfall, one publisher has spent months promising to sail straight into it — and on GTA 6’s reveal day of all days, we finally know what the mystery challenger is. Devolver Digital has unveiled Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed, a $5 mascot platformer arriving on Steam the exact same day Grand Theft Auto VI launches on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. It is a “remaster” of an unreleased action-platformer that never existed, starring a mascot best known for screaming. The bit is fully committed to, and it might genuinely be the smartest $5 marketing stroke of the year.

What Happened: The Mystery Game Has a Name
Devolver’s same-day launch pledge is old news by now — the publisher has been jokes-threatening it since GTA 6 occupied a May 2026 window, and when Rockstar’s colossus slid to November 19, Devolver followed it date-for-date. What was missing was the game itself. That changed today, with the unveiling of Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed, billed as a remaster of an “unreleased action-platformer” starring the publisher’s unhinged mascot Volvy.
Per Engadget’s breakdown, the game is being handled in the art style of Doinksoft — the team behind the roguelike platformer Dark Scrolls. The trailer shows Volvy smashing through levels and enemies with a giant fist, collecting onions and hunting secrets, all in service of rescuing his kidnapped friends from warlocks who “unleashed slime upon the world.” There are minigames between levels. And at some point Volvy can transform into a more muscular version of himself named — wait for it — Swolvy.
The “remaster of a nonexistent original” framing is the joke wearing the joke, and it’s exactly what you’d expect from the publisher of Hotline Miami and Cult of the Lamb. Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed hits Steam on November 19 for $5, with a 25 percent launch discount on top.
The Bit: A Year of Trolling the Colossus
To understand why a five-dollar platformer “challenging” the biggest game of all time is being covered as actual news, you need the full arc of the bit. When GTA 6’s launch window moved, Devolver publicly promised it would release a game “the exact same day and time as GTA6.” When the date moved again, the publisher chirped “You can’t escape us. November 19 it is then.” And during the height of August’s leak panic, it posted a single, perfectly-tuned line: “Please do not leak anything about the game we’re releasing on November 19.”
The rest of the industry, for context, did the opposite. Publishers emptied out November and crammed the schedule into September — the fall release calendar warped into a “nightmare” traffic jam specifically to keep weeks of distance between their games and Rockstar’s launch. The pile-up is real: The Blood of Dawnwalker landed September 3, Marvel’s Wolverine arrives September 15, LEGO Batman Legacy of the Dark Knight September 18, Silent Hill: Townfall September 24, and Onimusha: Way of the Sword a day later — a whole season of games shoving each other into a single month just to avoid sharing a zip code with GTA 6. Devolver is essentially the only company in gaming walking toward the blast radius, and it’s doing so with a game whose central mechanic is getting jacked.
Even the mascot is a bit. Volvy has spent years as Devolver’s fake-retro parody mascot — a hyper-aggressive, aggressively-smiling pixel frog-cat thing created to spoof the brand mascots of gaming’s past. Giving him a fake “lost” game to remaster, then launching it against GTA 6, is the publisher’s entire personality distilled into one release date.
And say what you want about the odds — this is a publisher that knows exactly what it is. The House of Hotline Miami, Cult of the Lamb, Inscryption and Enter the Gungeon has made irreverence its entire business model, and it has treated the GTA 6 staring contest with consistent comedic discipline: even its respectful mode is a joke, casually billing Rockstar’s project as a “AAAAA” game while promising a five-dollar counterprogramming option. The pricing is part of the punchline, too. At $5 — $3.75 with the launch discount — Volvy’s Adventure costs less than a third of one GTA 6 Fast Track mission, requires no 84-day countdown, and will be the single cheapest “new release” sharing a date with the most expensive game ever shipped.
What This Means for GTA 6 — and for PC Players
Let’s be clear: Rockstar is not sweating a $5 platformer. But Devolver’s calculus is more interesting than the punchline suggests. GTA 6 is console-only at launch — no PC date has been announced, and history says the wait could stretch into 2027 or beyond. That leaves every PC gamer on Earth with nothing to buy on November 19 except a five-dollar joke with a 25 percent discount. As GTABoom framed it: while console players queue for Vice City, the Steam storefront’s biggest launch-day rival is a slime-covered mascot platformer.
There’s also a genuine marketing lesson in here. A game asking $80 and hundreds of hours doesn’t serve everyone, and in a November where every other publisher fled, Devolver would be the only alternative standing on the shelf — the single store-page “other new release” next to the biggest game ever made. Attention is the scarcest currency in entertainment, and Devolver just bought a mountain of it for the price of a trailer and a running gag.
Zoom out and the November 19 shelf becomes a portrait of the industry in 2026. On one end: the most expensive entertainment product ever made, eight-plus years in the oven, premiering 26 minutes of official PS5-captured footage on Netflix tonight after surviving the leak saga of the decade. On the other: a five-dollar remaster of a game that never existed, built by a publisher whose entire brand identity is refusing to be intimidated. Every other company in gaming looked at that date and ran. These are the only two that stayed — one because it had to, one because the joke was too good to waste.
For GTA 6 watchers, the takeaway is simpler: November 19 now has a second act. One release is the most anticipated game of all time, premiering 26 minutes of official PS5 footage on Netflix tonight after surviving the leak saga of the decade. The other is a frog who gets jacked. Gaming in 2026, everybody.

If you’re one of the players who’ll be in Vice City on day one, make sure the hardware’s ready — the PS5 tonight’s Extended Look footage was captured on, or the Xbox Series X on the other side of the November 19 divide. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
