GTA 6 NEWS · COLLECTOR’S BOX BACKLASH
The $400 GTA 6 Collector’s Box Backlash Has United Fans — and Everyone Keeps Bringing Up Red Dead Redemption 2
Twenty-four hours. That’s how long it took the GTA 6 community — a fanbase that argues about everything from whether Key West is on the map to the correct way to pronounce Leonida — to reach a rare, near-unanimous consensus. The subject of that unity? The Goodtime State – Vice City Collection, Rockstar’s newly revealed collector’s box that costs $399.99 and does not include a copy of the game it celebrates.
We covered the reveal itself yesterday — eleven items, from a six-inch Macca the Gator figure to custom matte-black Oakleys, shipping November 19 for $399.99 (£349 in the UK). What’s happened since is the interesting part: the reaction has rolled in from X, Reddit, and every gaming outlet tracking it, and as both ScreenRant and IGN report, it’s somewhere between disappointed and furious. And the same comparison keeps surfacing, over and over: Red Dead Redemption 2 did this better, and cheaper, seven years ago.

What Happened
The collector’s box went up for pre-order on the Rockstar Store on September 24, and the backlash built within hours. ScreenRant’s read is that fans “seem to be unanimously unhappy” about the price — strong language for a fandom that happily absorbed a limited edition DualSense, a $124.98 vinyl, and a surprise $975,000 “Welcome to Vice City” sign on a Miami arena without blinking. IGN’s headline went further: “outraged.”
The sharpest reactions are on Reddit’s r/GTA6, where a thread titled “400 is absolutely insane thats mental” sums up the mood. “Like actually criminal,” wrote user roccosmodernlyf, as quoted by ScreenRant. “Game sold separately is icing on the cake.” Another user, Great-External-2439, questioned the entire concept: “Why should I be hyped about a cartoon alligator I know nothing about?” — a fair hit at a box themed around Macca the Gator, a fictional in-universe TV show that GTA 6 itself hasn’t even introduced yet.
On X, the takes were more elegantly brutal. “I hate to say it, but I think I’m gonna pass on the collector’s edition,” one fan told IGN. “$400 is just insane and it doesn’t even come with a steelbook copy of the game. I’d rather save my money and buy some individual merch items that look cool rather than some overpriced sunglasses.” Another fan, airbagg3d, posted the quote that’s been screenshot-ed everywhere since: “If this was 2016, they’d have an Ultimate Edition for $129.99 that includes the game, the coke mirror, the snuff spoon, the razor keychain and a map, but we live in 2026 SuperHell.”
The Red Dead Redemption 2 Comparison Everyone Keeps Making
If there’s a single thread running through the entire backlash, it’s Red Dead Redemption 2’s Special Edition box from 2018. That set also skipped the game — but it cost $100, a quarter of the price, and it was, by broad fan consensus, better judged: replicas of in-game items, pocket ephemera, and a full physical print of the game’s general store catalog, an object so lovingly made people still display it.
“I would’ve actually preferred a GTA 6 Collector’s Box similar to the one for Red Dead Redemption 2,” fan GermanStrands told IGN. “It felt more connected to the game and the price point of around 100 bucks was also WAY MORE reasonable.” That last part is the operative complaint. It’s not that Rockstar has never sold a game-free box — it’s that the last one cost $100, and this one costs $400, making it by far the most expensive collector’s edition in the company’s history.

IGN’s reporting points at one likely culprit for the gap: the Oakleys. Custom Oakley Frogskins routinely retail for $150–$200 on their own, and a bespoke GTA 6 pair — one of eleven items in the box — doesn’t come cheap to manufacture. The problem is that most buyers don’t want sunglasses as the tentpole of a game collector’s set, they want objects tethered to the game. A gator statue with a stash compartment qualifies. Fashion eyewear doesn’t.
Rockstar Used to Put the Game in the Box
The history lesson fans are quoting at Rockstar is accurate. Grand Theft Auto 5’s $79.99 Special Edition came with a steelbook, a blueprint map of San Andreas, digital extras, and — read this slowly — a physical copy of the game. The $150 Collector’s Edition stacked on a New Era snapback, a security deposit bag with a GTA 5-themed key, and a premium display box. Red Dead Redemption 2’s $79.99 Special Edition included a physical map and story-mode digital content, and the $99.99 Ultimate Edition added a steelbook and online extras.
GTA 6’s own $100 Ultimate Edition, by contrast, is all digital — useful in-game content, but no steelbook, no disc, no map, nothing you can hold. That’s the connective tissue of the whole backlash: every physical object Rockstar used to bundle with the game has been unbundled, repriced, and moved to a $400 box that — one more time — does not contain the game.
The Map Detail That Stings the Most
Buried in the item list is the detail longtime fans keep zeroing in on: the Vice City Collection includes a physical version of Leonida’s map. Physical maps used to simply come with Rockstar games — San Andreas blueprints, RDR2’s fold-out, GTA 4’s liberty city poster. Now the map lives inside a $400 merch box, and it’s genuinely unclear whether the standard boxed copy of GTA 6 will include one, especially since boxed copies won’t include a disc at all: they’re a code in a box, releasing November 12 so players can pre-load before the November 19 launch.
“I remember this used to come with the normal physical copy of the game,” X user TJGM_ wrote — and TJGM would know, being one of the modders who mapped the 192GB leak. IGN says it has reached out to Rockstar for clarification on the standard-edition map question. Until there’s an answer, fans are assuming the worst, and given the week they’ve had, who can blame them.
What This Means for GTA 6

ScreenRant frames this as potentially “one of GTA 6’s first big misses” — and as marketing stumbles go, that feels about right. For two years Rockstar has been unable to put a foot wrong: record-breaking trailers, a Netflix gameplay premiere, celebrities volunteering their hype, and a merchandise machine (the physical album release, the DualSense pair, the Miami sign) that has printed goodwill at industrial scale. This is the first product of the campaign where the consensus is “no.”
Does it matter for the game? Almost certainly not. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — confirmed, unchanged, and still on track to be the biggest entertainment launch in history. The box selling poorly wouldn’t register as a rounding error next to the game itself. And there’s a real chance it doesn’t sell poorly at all: the same reporting notes eBay resellers are already circling, and anyone who watched free Tokyo Game Show shirts hit $220 within days knows exactly how a limited $400 Rockstar box behaves in the wild. A sellout would prove the price was “correct” in the only language corporations speak.
The longer-term signal is the one worth watching. Everything about GTA 6’s physical rollout so far — no disc, no included map, digital-only special editions, a $400 game-free box — points the same direction: the game is going fully weightless, and anything you can hold is becoming luxury merchandise. Red Dead Redemption 2’s $100 box was a bonus for people who bought the game. The Vice City Collection is a product for people who love the brand. Those are different propositions, and fans have noticed the switch.
So the verdict from the community is: skip it, mostly. If the Oakleys and the gator statue call to you, the box is up for pre-order now on the Rockstar Store and ships November 19. But if you’re one of the many fans who’d rather have the game, the map, and $300 left over — pre-order GTA 6 for PS5 on Amazon or lock in the Xbox Series X|S version here.
Either way, the first fight GTA 6 ever picked with its own fanbase was over a box with no game in it. That’s almost too on-brand for a game about selling people things they don’t need.
