Twitch’s CEO Says GTA 6 Multiplayer Arrives in 2027 — and He’s Been Talking to Rockstar About It

The most-watched man in streaming just put a date on the biggest open question in gaming: when does GTA 6 get its multiplayer? According to Twitch CEO Dan Clancy — who says Twitch has spent “a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans” — the answer is 2027, the year after launch. And he expects it to be even bigger than the game itself.

Rockstar has described GTA 6 as a single-player experience and has not announced any multiplayer mode for it. But in an interview with Bloomberg on September 17, Clancy went further than any executive outside Rockstar has gone — and given that his teams have been briefed on Rockstar’s roadmap, his comments carry weight. Here’s what he said, and why it matters for every player counting down to November 19.

What Happened

Speaking to Bloomberg, Clancy made the case that game companies are right to avoid launching anything near GTA 6 — a window he calls the game’s attention vortex. Twitch, for its part, isn’t avoiding GTA 6. It’s bracing for it, because the platform expects a tidal wave of creators streaming the game the moment it goes live.

“We spent a lot of time talking with Rockstar about their plans, and also helping them think about how they can engage our creators,” Clancy said. Then came the line everyone is now dissecting: “You are going to see this big bump with GTA 6, but then an even bigger one next year when they launch multiplayer.”

Read that again: an even bigger one. The CEO of the world’s biggest streaming platform — a company that has sat in meetings with Rockstar about those plans — expects GTA 6’s multiplayer to out-draw the game’s launch. That tracks with history: GTA 5’s launch was a cultural event, but GTA Online became a permanent one.

Launch is the opening act — 2027 is when Clancy expects the “even bigger” wave.

Not an Announcement — but Not a Guess, Either

Let’s be precise about what this is, because it matters: Rockstar has not announced a GTA 6 multiplayer mode, a GTA Online sequel, or any post-launch roadmap. Nothing about a 2027 online component is official.

But this isn’t a random pundit’s prediction either. Clancy’s phrasing — “when they launch multiplayer,” not “if” — came in the same breath as his disclosure that Twitch has been in extended discussions with Rockstar about its plans and how streamers fit into them. As GameSpot notes, that context makes the comments read as considerably more than guesswork. IGN’s read is the same: whether it’s called GTA Online 2 or something else, the multiplayer portion of GTA 6 is expected next year.

The open question analysts are already arguing about is the month, not the year: early 2027, mid 2027, or late 2027. That ambiguity is exactly why Take-Two and Rockstar will want to control the announcement themselves — likely after launch, once the single-player game is in players’ hands.

The GTA Online Precedent

If 2027 feels like a long wait, remember that Rockstar has done this before — and the gap was smaller last time. GTA 5 launched on September 17, 2013, and GTA Online followed just a couple of weeks later. What Clancy is describing is a deliberate longer runway: let the single-player experience land, breathe, and sell consoles through the 2026 holidays, then deploy the online component as effectively a second launch in 2027.

The commercial logic is overwhelming. GTA Online became one of the most profitable entertainment products ever made on the strength of microtransactions, keeping GTA 5 in the sales charts for more than a decade. A 2027 multiplayer launch gives that machine a fresh start — and gives Twitch, YouTube and every streaming platform a second, bigger wave of content.

The other looming question: what happens to the current GTA Online? Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has pointed to the NBA 2K Online precedent — 2K launched that game in China in 2012, launched its sequel in 2017, and kept both running. “We’ve shown a willingness to support legacy titles when a community wants to be engaged with them,” Zelnick told IGN. If that philosophy holds, GTA Online may not die the day its sequel arrives — which matters to the millions still playing the GTA catalog today.

The Attention Vortex: Clancy’s Warning to the Rest of the Industry

The Bloomberg interview wasn’t only about GTA 6’s multiplayer window — Clancy also had a blunt message for every other publisher with a game scheduled near November 19: don’t. His argument, as reported by both Bloomberg and IGN, is that companies are right to avoid competing with GTA 6 for attention, because the game is expected to swallow the internet whole for weeks. He described the effect as a kind of vortex: creators flood to it, viewers follow the creators, and everything else on the platform struggles to be seen in the meantime.

That’s why the 2027 multiplayer line matters so much to him specifically. If launch is a vortex, a GTA Online successor is a permanent weather system. GTA 5-era GTA Online turned streaming platforms into round-the-clock GTA networks for a decade — roleplay servers alone became an industry of their own, minting careers and keeping a 2013 game at the top of Twitch’s charts into the 2020s. Twitch isn’t planning around a game; it’s planning around the next ten years of its own content supply.

And that, ironically, is the strongest argument for believing the 2027 framing. Clancy has commercial reasons to know exactly when the second wave hits — ad packages, creator programs and platform features all get planned quarters in advance. A man in that position doesn’t casually say “when they launch multiplayer” unless he’s been given reason to believe it’s coming in that window.

What This Means for GTA 6

First: plan for a two-stage launch. November 19 is the single-player beginning, not the whole story. If multiplayer lands in 2027 as Clancy expects, GTA 6 will dominate two holiday seasons instead of one — and everything from console bundles to streamer events will be paced around that second wave.

Second: streaming is part of the plan. Clancy isn’t a bystander here — Twitch has been actively helping Rockstar think about creator engagement. Expect coordinated streaming moments at launch and again when multiplayer arrives, in the same all-out spirit as the Barbie-scale marketing blitz Take-Two has already promised.

Third: don’t expect Rockstar to confirm this yet. Nothing is official until Rockstar says it. Treat 2027 as an informed expectation from a very well-placed observer — not a date to carve into stone. The only date that is carved in stone: GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a PC version expected to follow after launch.
