GTA 6 Turned October Into a Release Bloodbath — and One Soulslike Is Diving In Anyway

Grand Theft Auto VI doesn’t release until November 19, 2026 — and yet the game has already reshaped the entire fall release calendar without a single store page going live. Publishers ran screaming from November, stampeded into October, and turned next month into what PC Gamer is calling a release bloodbath: Ace Combat 8, Gears of War: E-Day, Modern Warfare 4 and more, all crammed into the same four-week window. And in the middle of the pile-up, one studio is deliberately running toward the fire.

That studio is One More Level — the developers behind the Ghostrunner series — and their first-person Napoleonic soulslike Valor Mortis launches October 13 at a deliberately friendly $40 price point. Their publisher’s reasoning says everything about how much power Rockstar now wields over everyone else’s release plans.

What Happened

PC Gamer took stock of the November 2026 release schedule and found it virtually deserted — because almost nobody in the industry is willing to ship a game within spitting distance of GTA 6. The one meaningful exception is Nintendo’s Ocarina of Time remake, which lands November 5 — a face-off we covered when Nintendo called GTA 6’s bluff. Just about everyone else looked at November 19 and picked another month entirely.

That exodus created a bottleneck in October. Next month alone brings Ace Combat 8, Gears of War: E-Day, Star Wars: Galactic Racer and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — four mid-to-big budget launches sharing shelf space. Underneath them sits a second wave of anticipated releases without a mega-publisher umbrella: a new Hellraiser game, Silver Pines, Jonathan Blow’s next project, Planet Zoo 2, a Tales of Eternia remaster, the 1.0 launch of Enshrouded, and a new Final Fantasy 2D-HD remake.

Into this fray steps Valor Mortis, a first-person soulslike from One More Level that’s releasing October 13 — squarely inside the pile-up. Its publisher, Lyrical Games, is fully aware of what it’s up against, as publishing boss Blake Rochkind explained in an interview with The Game Business: “By virtue of the development schedule, the cards we’ve been dealt is that we are one of the only new IPs launching this fall. We are pretty confident in Valor Mortis. But ultimately, the worst thing we could do is not push our chips in and say, ‘We want this to be a game that you can pick up alongside these other great games.'”

How the Whole Fall Became Musical Chairs

The October crush is actually round two of the schedule chaos. Round one happened in September. When GTA 6’s November 19 date locked in, developers fled to late September — and quickly overbooked it. Eurogamer and TheSixthAxis documented the pile-on: Control, Silent Hill: Townfall, Onimusha: Way of the Sword and more all crowded into the same few weeks, and suddenly September looked as dangerous as November.

Valor Mortis was one of the first casualties. The game was originally dated for September 24 — a slot that looked clean when Lyrical locked it in. “When we picked September 24th, it looked like a very, very clear date. Very quickly it became not such a clear date,” Rochkind said earlier this year. “As soon as Control announced September 24th, we knew we were moving the date.” The soulslike shifted to October 13, trading a stuffed September for a stuffed October — because the only truly safe ground, November, belongs to Rockstar.

That’s the remarkable part: there is effectively nowhere on the fall calendar that GTA 6 hasn’t touched. Games fled November, overfilled September, spilled into October, and even the escapees are now tripping over each other. One release date has bent the entire industry’s Q4 around itself.

The $40 “And Game” Strategy

Lyrical Games’ answer to the bloodbath is pricing. Valor Mortis launches at $40 — well below the $70-and-up asking price of the blockbusters around it — and Rochkind is blunt about why. He recalled advice from another developer who had success at a lower price point: “We never regretted being an ‘and’ game. We never regretted pricing our game as something that you can pick up alongside other games.”

In other words: Valor Mortis isn’t trying to win October. It’s trying to be the game you buy and also play between Gears of War and the long wait for November 19. It’s a fascinating bit of psychology — publishers aren’t just avoiding GTA 6’s date anymore, they’re now explicitly designing their price points to coexist with the surrounding chaos that GTA 6 created.

There’s one more wrinkle worth noting for our crowd: Valor Mortis is launching on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. GTA 6, of course, is console-only at launch — a fact that’s fueling the ongoing PC speculation, especially after Take-Two’s boss called PC “more and more important”. For PC players staring at an empty November, an October soulslike is less competition and more consolation prize.

What This Means for GTA 6

Stories like this are the clearest possible measure of GTA 6’s gravity. It’s one thing for a game to sell well; it’s another for publishers across the industry to structure their entire fourth quarter around a single launch date — not once (September), but twice (October), while the actual month of release stays empty except for Nintendo. Take-Two’s CEO has compared the game’s cultural positioning to the Barbie movie’s marketing moment, and the release calendar is now behaving accordingly: like a tentpole so big that everything else schedules around it, Hollywood-style.

The retail side is already feeling it too — PS5 and Xbox sales jumped in the UK on nothing but GTA 6 anticipation, two months before launch. If hardware is moving in September, imagine what an October stuffed with $70 blockbusters plus a $40 “and game” plus a November 19 monster release does to holiday wallets.

And for players, the practical upshot is simple: your GTA 6 waiting period just got expensive. The industry has front-loaded its biggest releases into the five weeks before Leonida opens its gates — almost as if everyone wants their game in your hands and finished before November 19 arrives and swallows the conversation whole.

While You Wait for November 19
