GTA 6’s Controversial Refuelling Takes Just 10 Seconds — And Rockstar’s Co-Studio Head Is Already Asking If You’ll Like It
The most divisive gas pump in gaming history just got a timing attached to it. According to a creator who played an extended GTA 6 preview session overseen by Rockstar North co-studio head Rob Nelson, filling your tank takes about ten seconds — and Nelson himself thinks that settles the debate. “Hey, that’s pretty fast for a fill up,” he reportedly remarked mid-session. “You can’t complain about that.” Whether the internet agrees is, as always, a very different question.
What Happened
The details come from YouTuber TGG, who recently went hands-on (or eyes-on) with an extended preview of Grand Theft Auto 6 — a session apparently overseen by Nelson himself. As reported by PC Gamer and GamesRadar+, TGG says GTA 6’s gas stations are full-service stops in more ways than one: pull in, and you can choose to repair your vehicle, refuel a combustion-engined car, or recharge an electric one.
Select the refuel or recharge option and the game triggers a short animated sequence — TGG describes it as a quick-time-style beat with the fill-up animation playing out — which he estimates lasts around 10 seconds before you’re back on the road. It’s that number that gave Nelson his opening. Watching the pump do its thing, the co-studio head of the studio building the game offered his own live review: “Hey, that’s pretty fast for a fill up. You can’t complain about that.”
But the more revealing moment came afterwards. When TGG questioned why Rockstar would add a fuel system at all, Nelson’s answer carried a hint of genuine uncertainty: “We’ll see what people say” — followed by a question fired back at the creator: “Do you think people are going to like it?”
That’s not the sound of a studio boss reading a marketing line. That’s the sound of someone who has spent years building a mechanic he believes in, knows exactly how polarizing it is online, and genuinely doesn’t know how November will go. TGG’s own verdict was diplomatic: “Fuel isn’t really going to be an issue unless you’re not thinking about what you’re doing.”

Why Refuelling Is GTA 6’s Most Argued-About Feature
On paper, a fuel gauge is the least glamorous feature imaginable. In practice, it’s become one of the most fiercely debated additions in the series’ history. Ever since Rockstar confirmed that cars in GTA 6 will actually run out of gas, a chunk of the fanbase has treated the mechanic as a dealbreaker — an interruption to the drive-fast-shoot-faster loop that defines Grand Theft Auto.
The nightmare scenarios write themselves: you’ve got a five-star wanted level, three squad cars on your bumper, and the Infernus starts sputtering half a block from the nearest pump. Do you really want to sit through a ten-second fill-up animation while a police helicopter circles overhead? That tension — between immersion and momentum — is exactly what Nelson’s “do you think people are going to like it?” question is poking at.
It’s also not a new fight for Rockstar. When Red Dead Redemption 2 arrived in 2018, a vocal minority balked at its simulation-heavy design — Arthur Morgan’s weighty movement, the saddlebag inventory fiddling, the camp chores. That game went on to sell tens of millions of copies anyway, and its slow-burn realism is now widely considered part of its genius. GTA 6 is clearly betting the same way: Rockstar reportedly cut a grocery-shopping system for being too real — but the gas gauge survived the edit. Fuel isn’t an accident. It’s a philosophy.

The Details That Matter More Than the Seconds
Focus on the “10 seconds” headline and you’ll miss the two bigger details buried in TGG’s account. First, gas stations are repair and refuel stops combined — which quietly makes them useful in a way fuel alone never would be. A single location that fixes your bodywork AND tops up your tank is a roadside service station, not a chore. Second, the system covers electric vehicles too: EVs in Leonida will need recharging, not just gas cars refuelling. That’s a modern-day Florida detail that a 1980s-throwback Vice City could never have had, and it hints at how deeply Rockstar has thought about the state’s car culture — gas guzzlers, EVs, and everything in between sharing the same roads.
There’s also the pacing math. Ten seconds per stop only becomes annoying if you’re forced to stop often — and that’s the variable Rockstar still controls. TGG’s read (“fuel isn’t really going to be an issue unless you’re not thinking about what you’re doing”) suggests tanks drain slowly enough that refuelling is a planning decision, not a constant tax. If that holds at launch, the whole controversy may fade within the first week of play, the same way RDR2’s “clunky” movement stopped being a talking point once people actually lived in the world.
And if you simply cannot wait to feel the pain, one enterprising writer already modded a GTA 6-style fuel system into GTA 5 — spoilers: it’s exactly the kind of friction you either learn to love or learn to route around.

What This Means for GTA 6
Three takeaways worth keeping in your tank. One: Rockstar is officially done hedging on refuelling — Nelson isn’t apologizing for it, he’s pre-selling it. “You can’t complain about that” is a studio that knows the mechanic is in the shipping build and wants the discourse to move on. Two: the “We’ll see what people say” line is the most honest read on Rockstar’s internal mood we’ve gotten in months — after the leak saga, the reveal, and now the preview circuit, the studio is visibly aware that every design choice will be litigated in real time. Three: none of this changes the fundamentals: GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with Lucia Caminos and Jason Duval leading a modern-day Leonida that includes — like it or not — working gas pumps.
Our advice? Embrace it. Fuel gives long chases a resource to manage, gives gas stations a reason to exist on the map, and gives you one more small way to live in Rockstar’s world instead of just driving through it. Ten seconds is less time than most players spend checking their phone at a red light. You’ll be fine — and if you’re not, there’s always the ocean.
While You Wait for November
If ten seconds at the pump sounds unbearable, practice some patience the fun way: the Grand Theft Auto: The Trilogy – Definitive Edition lets you cruise the original Vice City with zero fuel worries — just you, the radio, and 2002’s finest neon.
