How to Prepare for GTA 6: The Ultimate Pre-Launch Checklist

November 19, 2026. That is the day Grand Theft Auto VI arrives, and it will be the biggest game launch in history. Whether you have been following every leak and trailer since 2013 or you are just now waking up to the hype, you need to be prepared. GTA 6 is not the kind of game you want to stumble into unprepared — not when it demands a 150GB+ install, a current-generation console, and a launch day that will likely bring server overloads, shipping delays, and sold-out stock everywhere.

This is your complete pre-launch checklist. Ten steps, in order, to make sure that when November 19 rolls around you are locked in, powered up, and ready to lose yourself in Leonida from the very first minute. Let us walk through each one.

1. Pick Your Platform: PS5 vs Xbox Series X

GTA 6 is a current-generation console exclusive at launch — that means no PS4, no Xbox One, and no PC version at release. You need either a PlayStation 5 or an Xbox Series X/S. This is the single most important decision you will make, and ideally you should make it months before launch.

The PlayStation 5 has a key advantage: Rockstar captured Trailer 2 on a base PS5, meaning the PS5 is the reference platform Rockstar themselves used to showcase the game. The DualSense controller’s haptic feedback and adaptive triggers could add immersive layers — feeling the kick of a gun or the resistance of a boat’s throttle — that the Xbox controller cannot replicate. Sony also has a history of marketing partnerships with Rockstar, which could mean timed-exclusive content.

The Xbox Series X has marginally more raw processing power on paper (12 teraflops vs 10.28), which could translate to slightly higher resolutions or more stable frame rates in the most demanding scenes. Xbox also offers Game Pass integration, Quick Resume (jump between games instantly), and a strong ecosystem if you are already invested in Microsoft’s platform. The Xbox Series S is the budget option at roughly half the price, but it targets 1080p and may not deliver the full visual experience.

If you already own one of these consoles, you are set. If you do not, buy one now — do not wait until November when stock will be unpredictable and scalper prices will spike.

2. Clear Your Storage: GTA 6 Will Be Massive

GTA 6 is expected to require 150GB or more of storage space. That is not a typo. The game contains a massive open world, high-resolution textures, hours of cutscenes, complex audio design, and the full weight of RAGE 9 technology. Your console’s internal storage may not be enough, especially if you already have other large games installed.

The base PS5 comes with 825GB of storage, of which roughly 667GB is usable after system overhead. If you have a library of games already installed, you need to start clearing space now. Delete what you are not playing, archive old saves, and make sure you have at least 200GB free to account for the install plus future updates and patches.

PS5 Storage Upgrade

The PS5 has an internal NVMe SSD expansion slot, and installing a drive is straightforward. You need a PCIe Gen4 NVMe SSD with a heatsink. Recommended options include the Samsung 990 Pro, the WD Black SN850X, and the Crucial P3 Plus, all available in 1TB, 2TB, and 4TB capacities. A 2TB drive will cost roughly $150–$200 and gives you room for GTA 6 plus a substantial library. Make sure to buy one with a heatsink — or buy a separate heatsink — as the PS5 expansion slot requires cooling.

Xbox Storage Upgrade

The Xbox Series X uses a proprietary expansion card system rather than an open NVMe slot. You buy a Seagate or WD Black expansion card that slots directly into the back of the console — no tools, no installation, just plug and play. The 1TB card typically runs $130–$150, and a 2TB version is also available. It is more expensive per gigabyte than the PS5’s open NVMe option, but it is also simpler to install.

3. Pre-Order the Right Edition

Rockstar has confirmed two main editions of GTA 6 at launch. Understanding the difference is crucial because the pre-order bonuses are time-sensitive and the right edition depends on how much GTA Online content you want on day one.

  • Standard Edition — $79.99: The base game, the full single-player campaign, and access to GTA 6 Online when it launches. This is what most players will want. It includes the Vintage Vice City Pack as a pre-order bonus.
  • Ultimate Edition — $99.99: Everything in the Standard Edition plus bonus in-game content, likely including exclusive vehicles, weapons, properties, and currency for GTA 6 Online. If you plan to be a heavy online player, the extra $20 is worth it for the head-start content.

The Vintage Vice City Pack is a pre-order bonus available with both editions — it includes cosmetic items themed around the original Vice City, likely including classic vehicle skins, clothing options, and other nostalgia-driven rewards. If you pre-order, you get this pack for free. If you wait and buy after launch, you will likely miss out on it permanently or have to purchase it separately.

Pre-order as early as possible. Physical copies will sell out at launch, and digital pre-orders let you pre-load the game so it is ready to play the second the clock strikes midnight on November 19.

4. Upgrade Your Setup

GTA 6 is going to be a visual and audio showcase. If you are going to spend dozens — possibly hundreds — of hours in Leonida, you want to experience it the right way. Here are three upgrades that will make a real difference:

A Great Headset

Rockstar’s sound design is legendary — from the radio stations to the weapon effects to the ambient city noise. A quality gaming headset will immerse you completely. Look for something with spatial audio support (3D Audio on PS5, Windows Sonic or Dolby Atmos on Xbox), comfortable ear cups for long sessions, and a good microphone for online play. Top picks include the SteelSeries Arctis Nova 7, the Turtle Beach Stealth 600, and the Pulse 3D for PS5 owners.

A Better TV

If you are still playing on a 1080p TV from 2015, now is the time to upgrade. A 4K TV with HDMI 2.1, 120Hz refresh rate, and HDR will unlock GTA 6’s full visual potential. OLED TVs (like the LG C-series) offer the best picture quality with perfect blacks and infinite contrast, making Vice City’s neon nightlife look spectacular. If OLED is out of budget, a good Mini LED or QLED set will still be a massive step up.

A Comfortable Chair

Do not underestimate this one. You are going to spend marathon sessions in GTA 6, and a bad chair will wreck your back. Invest in a proper gaming chair or ergonomic office chair with lumbar support, adjustable armrests, and breathable fabric. Your future self — the one 60 hours deep into the campaign at 3 AM — will thank you.

5. Play (or Replay) GTA V

If you have never played GTA 5 — or if it has been years — now is the time to dive back in. GTA 5 is the most direct reference point for what GTA 6 will build upon. The three-protagonist system, the heist missions, the driving mechanics, the shooting, the open-world exploration — all of these systems will return in evolved form in GTA 6. Playing GTA 5 now will warm up your muscle memory and give you context for how far the franchise has come.

Beyond mechanics, GTA 5’s story is worth experiencing (or re-experiencing) for its own sake. The intertwined tales of Michael, Franklin, and Trevor remain some of the best-written characters in gaming. And the PS5 and Xbox Series X versions of GTA 5 run at 60 FPS with enhanced graphics, making it a great way to experience the game if you have only played the PS3 or PS4 versions.

6. Explore Original Vice City

GTA 6 brings us back to Vice City, and while the HD Universe version is completely different from the PS2-era original, experiencing the 2002 classic will give you an appreciation for the locations, landmarks, and atmosphere that Rockstar is reimagining. Driving down Ocean Beach, visiting the Malibu Club, hearing those legendary radio stations — it all adds context and emotional weight to the return.

The easiest way to experience the original Vice City is through the GTA Trilogy: The Definitive Edition, which includes remastered versions of GTA III, Vice City, and San Andreas with updated graphics, modern controls, and improved lighting. The Definitive Edition had a rough launch but has been substantially patched and is now a solid way to experience the classics on modern hardware.

7. Watch Both Trailers

Rockstar has released two official trailers for GTA 6, and both are essential viewing. Trailer 1 dropped in December 2023 and introduced us to Lucia and Jason, showed off Vice City, and established the Bonnie-and-Clyde narrative tone. Trailer 2 arrived in May 2025 with an extended look at gameplay, the world, the supporting cast, and the sheer visual fidelity of RAGE 9 on current-gen hardware.

Watch both trailers carefully — not just once, but multiple times. Pause and look at the background details. Notice the NPC density on Vice City’s beaches. Study the vehicle designs. Look at how the lighting changes from day to night. The trailers are not just marketing; they are the best preview we have of what the final game will look and feel like. The more familiar you are with them, the more you will appreciate the details when you finally play.

8. Join the Community

Half the fun of a GTA launch is the community. The hype, the theories, the frame-by-frame trailer analysis, the countdown threads — it is a collective experience that makes the wait more bearable and the launch more exciting. Get plugged in now so you are part of the conversation when November arrives.

  • r/GTA6 on Reddit: The largest GTA 6 community, with daily news, discussion, leaks, and speculation. A great place to stay up to date.
  • GTA Forums: The longest-running GTA fan community, featuring deep analysis threads, leaked content archives, and veteran fans who have been following the franchise since the PS2 era.
  • YouTube and TikTok: Content creators will be going into overdrive in the months leading up to launch. Find a few you enjoy for trailer breakdowns, news recaps, and speculation.

9. Manage Your Expectations

If you are a PC player, we need to have an honest conversation. GTA 6 is not launching on PC on November 19, 2026. Rockstar has a well-established pattern: GTA 5 launched on PS3 and Xbox 360 in 2013, and the PC version did not arrive until April 2015 — 18 months later. Red Dead Redemption 2 launched on consoles in October 2018, and the PC version followed in December 2019 — 14 months later.

Based on that pattern, the GTA 6 PC release could come in mid-to-late 2027 or possibly even stretch into 2028. If you want to play GTA 6 in 2026, you will need a console. That is a hard pill to swallow for PC purists, but it is the reality of Rockstar’s release strategy. The PC version will eventually arrive with enhanced graphics, mod support, and higher frame rates — but patience is required.

Also, manage expectations about GTA 6 Online. Rockstar has confirmed it will launch after the single-player campaign, so do not expect to jump into multiplayer on day one. The single-player story is the focus at launch, and the online experience will follow.

10. Plan Your Launch Day

This is the fun part. November 19, 2026 is a Thursday, which means you have a strategic decision to make. Do you take Thursday and Friday off and get a four-day weekend with GTA 6? Do you call in sick? Do you request vacation time now, months in advance, before your coworkers beat you to it? (Yes. Request it now.)

Here is your launch day plan:

  • Pre-load the game if you bought digital. The game will download ahead of launch so it unlocks the instant it goes live.
  • Stock up on snacks and drinks. You are going to be playing for hours. Have food that does not require leaving your setup. Energy drinks, chips, pizza delivery on speed dial.
  • Charge your controllers. Have a backup charged and ready. Nothing kills momentum like a dead controller mid-mission.
  • Tell your friends and family you will be unavailable. Set expectations now so nobody is offended when you do not respond to texts on November 19.
  • Take the week off if you can. A long weekend is good. A full week is better. GTA 6’s campaign will be massive, and the first week is going to be an experience you will remember for the rest of your life.

You Are Ready

That is it. Platform chosen, storage cleared, edition pre-ordered, setup upgraded, back catalog refreshed, community joined, expectations managed, and launch day planned. You are as prepared as any GTA fan can be for the biggest game release in history. Now all that is left is to wait — and to enjoy the anticipation, because a moment like this only comes around once every 13 years.

See you in Vice City.
