Helldivers 2 Boss Is Happy GTA 6 Is Skipping PC at Launch — and Has No Online Mode Either
While most of the gaming industry is quietly rearranging its release calendar to get out of GTA 6’s way, the CEO of Helldivers 2 studio Arrowhead has gone on record with a hotter take: he’s rooting for Rockstar — and he’s quietly relieved about the two things GTA 6 won’t have this November. A PC version, and an online mode.
What Happened: “Not the All-Consuming Behemoth”
Speaking to IGN on GTA 6 reveal day, Arrowhead boss Shams Jorjani was asked about the industry-wide dread surrounding the November 19 launch — the dread so intense it’s one of the reasons we got a September crush of game releases this year. His answer was refreshingly honest.
“Rockstar makes ridiculous, high-effort stuff and it’s awesome that games like this get made,” Jorjani said. “On a selfish level I’m happy it’s not hitting PC right away, and that online isn’t dropping at launch. It means Helldivers 2 gets to keep crushing it in our own space, and is also why it won’t be the all consuming behemoth everyone’s worried about.”
Read that again: the CEO of a live-service shooter just called GTA 6’s launch strategy good news — for everyone who isn’t Rockstar. He also gave the game a compliment any dev would envy: “It’s going to raise the bar for sure.”

The Context: He’s Been Bracing for This for a Year
This isn’t Jorjani’s first rodeo with the GTA 6 question. When the game was delayed earlier this year, he described the extra time as a “stay of execution” for Helldivers 2 and warned that Rockstar’s game would “blot out the sun in a way that is unimaginable for everyone else.” The delay, he said at the time, meant “six more months of uninterrupted work without GTA looming over us.”
So his reveal-day comments are less a victory lap and more a public exhale. Two specific quirks of GTA 6’s launch make it survivable for a live-service PC shooter: GTA 6 is console-only at launch (PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, with no PC date announced — Rockstar history suggests 2027-2028), and it’s a single-player game this November. There is no next-generation GTA Online at launch, full stop. The mode that ate the gaming internet for a decade isn’t on the menu yet.
Why PC and Online Are the Magic Words
Think about what actually threatens a game like Helldivers 2. It’s not GTA 6 selling 40 million copies to console players who finish the story and move on. It’s attention — the endless content treadmill of GTA Online capturing streamers, clips, and group chat energy for years. That threat doesn’t arrive until Rockstar’s online component exists. And the player base most likely to bounce between games — the PC crowd that made Helldivers 2 a phenomenon — doesn’t even get GTA 6 at launch.
As IGN notes, Rockstar is perhaps the only developer that can skip PC entirely and still guarantee the biggest entertainment launch of the year. That confidence cuts both ways: it’s why the Netflix Extended Look premiere briefly wobbled the world’s biggest streaming service, and it’s why studios with games in the launch window spent the summer sprinting to safety. Everyone Else Is Running
Jorjani’s candor stands out because most studios have chosen flight over commentary. This year’s September release schedule is a traffic jam precisely because publishers shoved everything they could in front of November 19 — a pattern the industry repeated the moment GTA 6’s date locked in. The few publicly embracing the collision are doing it as a bit: Devolver Digital pledged to launch its $5 mascot platformer Volvy’s Adventure: Reslimed on the same day as GTA 6, a joke escalation of its years-long running gag — see our full rundown of Devolver’s GTA 6 “competitor”.
The nervousness is rational. GTA 5 generated over $8 billion and sold more than 215 million copies across three console generations, and its online mode became a permanent fixture of gaming culture for over a decade. Nothing else in entertainment — not movies, not music, not other games — commands this kind of schedule-warping gravity. When the trailer premiere alone can stagger Netflix, executives pay attention.
The GTA Online History Lesson
If you’re wondering why “no online at launch” matters so much, rewind to 2013. GTA 5 launched that September as a single-player game; GTA Online arrived a month later, wobbled through a rocky first stretch — and then never stopped. It grew into a content empire of heists, businesses, races, and collaborations that kept GTA 5 on sales charts for over a decade and became the social hub for an entire generation of players. That’s the gravitational body heading toward GTA 6, just on a delay Rockstar hasn’t quantified.
So the industry’s window is real but temporary. Whenever Rockstar’s next-generation online experience does arrive — presumably with PC support somewhere in that picture — the “all consuming behemoth” scenario Jorjani jokes about gets its second act. For now, though, November’s GTA 6 is “just” the biggest single-player launch in entertainment history, and there’s apparently enough oxygen for a co-op shooter about spreading managed democracy.
What This Means for GTA 6
Jorjani’s comments are a useful reality check against both the doom and the hype. GTA 6 will be enormous — but its launch shape (console-only, single-player only) leaves lanes open that a full-spectrum launch would’ve flattened. For players, that’s pure upside: the relationship systems and story Rockstar showed this week are the entire product in November, with the online era still to come on Rockstar’s clock.
And if you’re one of the console players the whole industry is clearing runway for — November 19, 2026, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — there’s still time to grab a PlayStation 5 or Xbox Series X before the rush. As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases.
