Rockstar Hid Actual Red Dead Redemption 2 Footage in GTA 6’s Extended Look — Fans Found It Within Hours

Grand Theft Auto 6’s Extended Look was always going to get torn apart frame by frame — that is what the GTA community does. But nobody quite expected the biggest discovery of the dissect-a-thon to be a trip to 2018. Buried inside one of the broadcast’s fake TV commercials is genuine Red Dead Redemption 2 footage, and one eagle-eyed fan tracked down the exact real-world location within hours of the premiere.

Yes: while you were staring at the burger, Rockstar was quietly showing you its last game inside its next one.

What Happened: A Burger Ad with a Secret

During the Extended Look — the 26-minute GTA 6 showcase Rockstar debuted on Netflix — one segment took the form of an in-universe television commercial for what might be the unhealthiest burger ever invented. Behind the towering stack of patties, a lush outdoor scene plays: a winding river curling through green trees, notable rock formations lining the banks, and an array of animals grazing nearby. Presumably, in the ad’s logic, those animals are destined to become the burger’s next thirty thousand calories.

As IGN reported, that backdrop isn’t a GTA 6 location at all. It’s footage captured inside Red Dead Redemption 2 — same river, same trees, most of the same rocks. Rockstar appears to have tweaked the lighting and sprinkled in some extra wildlife for the shot, but the geometry gives it away. Fans on the Red Dead Redemption subreddit compared the scene to the in-game map and landed on a match almost immediately.

GTA 6 has its own wilderness — but the burger ad’s scenery came from Rockstar’s last open world.

Where to Find It: The Kamassa River U-Bend

Reddit user DangerousLeo — who found the spot and posted the side-by-side comparison that spread across social media — pinpointed the location as the U-bend in the Kamassa River, north-west of Annesburg, just to the west of Deer Cottage. If you want to check it yourself in Red Dead Redemption 2, that’s where you ride.

How did DangerousLeo recognize a few seconds of riverside scenery so fast? They admitted to having more than 730 hours logged in Red Dead Redemption 2. At that point, the Kamassa River is basically your morning commute.

For the record: the animals aren’t normally gathered there, and the lighting in the commercial doesn’t match the game’s usual look in that spot. Those are exactly the tell-tale signs of a developer re-staging a familiar location for a new shot — which is what makes the discovery so charming. This isn’t a random asset reuse; it’s Rockstar redecorating its own house.

Why Rockstar Reached Back to 2018

Before anyone fires up the rumor mill: no, this is not confirmation of a Red Dead Redemption 2 4K remaster. The far more plausible explanation, as IGN notes, is practical. An in-universe TV commercial needs scenery that exists right now, and GTA 6’s own open world has likely kept changing throughout development — every trailer frame of Leonida we’ve seen has come from builds that were locked months before release. Reaching for a stable, finished location from Red Dead Redemption 2 is simply the path of least resistance for a background plate.

There’s also a wink in it. Rockstar has a long history of threading its universes together — the Red Dead book on Franklin’s shelf in GTA 5, the RDR2 photograph in Cayo Perico, the possibility of John Marston as a GTA Online ancestor. Slipping its previous game into a fake burger ad is exactly the kind of self-referential gag the studio’s fans have been trained to hunt for.

Not the Only RDR2 Reference Fans Have Spotted

The burger-ad discovery is the headline, but it’s part of a wider wave of Red Dead–spotting since the Extended Look aired. Fans have also flagged the cash scattered in one of GTA 6’s club scenes, where the bills appear to carry fictional presidents from Red Dead Redemption 2’s collectible cigarette cards rather than anything from a real wallet — a deep-cut crossover spotted by yet another Reddit user and picked up by outlets covering the fan reaction.

That’s the thing about this community in the final stretch before launch: nothing is too small. A 26-minute showcase is currently being treated like the Zapruder film, and Rockstar knows it. Whether the burger backdrop was a deliberate Easter egg or just a resourceful reuse of old assets, the studio had to suspect somebody with 730 hours in RDR2 would find it. Somebody always does.

It’s also worth pausing on how fast this all happened. The Extended Look premiered on a Thursday evening; by Friday morning, the side-by-side comparison of the Kamassa River U-bend was already circulating across Reddit, X and TikTok, with players fast-travelling to Annesburg to film their own matching shots. The speed of collective detection is its own phenomenon — thousands of fans effectively running a distributed forensic scan of every frame, cross-referencing landmarks against a game map they know better than their own neighborhoods. Rockstar could have hidden that river bend anywhere. It chose a spot one superfan drives past on the way to Deer Cottage.

What This Means for GTA 6

On its own, a recycled riverbed is a footnote. But it reinforces two bigger points about how GTA 6 is being built. First: Rockstar’s worlds are now a shared workshop. The same studio, the same engine lineage, the same craft that built RDR2’s staggeringly detailed wilderness is building Leonida — and occasionally the two overlap on screen. Second: the detail density is so high that even the fake TV commercials inside the game have lore-discussable backgrounds. If a throwaway burger ad can hide a cross-game Easter egg, imagine what the actual map is hiding.

It also feeds the eternal shared-universe conversation. Rockstar has never confirmed that GTA and Red Dead take place in the same world, and references like these keep the question deliciously unresolved. Expect the dataminers to have a field day on November 19.

The Bottom Line

The Extended Look gave us Jason and Lucia’s story, the biggest open world Rockstar has ever shipped, and a soundtrack for the ages — and it still had room to hide a love letter to Red Dead Redemption 2 inside a greasy fake burger ad. Found within hours, of course. This community does not miss.

GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. If you want to visit the Kamassa River U-bend before launch, Red Dead Redemption 2 is the ticket — 730 hours not required, apparently, but it helps.
