GTA 6 Hype Is Already Selling Consoles — UK PS5 and Xbox Sales Just Jumped More Than 30%
Grand Theft Auto VI is still ten weeks from launch, and it’s already doing something no game has managed in years: making people buy consoles again. Fresh market data from NielsenIQ, reported by The Game Business, shows UK sales of the PS5 jumped 33% and Xbox Series X/S climbed 34% in the week following GTA 6’s mega-hyped “An Extended Look” gameplay reveal. In a year where console hardware has been flatlining, one trailer did more for the market than months of price cuts and bundles ever could.
It’s the clearest evidence yet that GTA 6 isn’t just going to be the biggest game of 2026 — it’s shaping up to be a hardware event on the scale of a new console generation. And the numbers suggest we’re only seeing the first ripple of a wave that crashes properly on November 19.

What Happened: The Post-Reveal Sales Spike
Here’s the chain of events. On August 26, Rockstar dropped GTA 6: An Extended Look — a deep-dive gameplay presentation that pulled in nearly 4 million concurrent viewers across livestreaming platforms, briefly overwhelming Twitch in the process. More than 31 million people then watched the full deep dive on Netflix, with another 22 million-plus views on YouTube — and that’s not even counting the re-uploads. It was, by most measures, the biggest games-media moment of the decade.
Then the cash registers started ringing. According to NielsenIQ data supplied to The Game Business, UK weekly sales of the PS5 shot up 33% week-over-week, while Xbox Series X/S sales leapt 34%. That’s not a seasonal blip or a bundle promotion — that’s millions of people watching Lucia and Jason rip through Vice City and deciding, on the spot, that they’re going to need hardware ready by November.
The spike comes with real-world scarcity attached. In the UK, just one model of the PS5 Pro was available to buy outright through Sony’s own website in the days after the reveal, with most third-party retailers out of stock — and scalpers on eBay were asking as much as $1,500 for PS5 Pro units. We broke down the scalping mess in our PS5 Pro price-gouging report, and it’s only intensified since.
Curiously, the Nintendo Switch 2 also saw UK sales rise by roughly a third that same week — though analysts attribute that to buyers getting ahead of the console’s announced price increase, not GTA 6 envy. Still, it made for a rare good news week for the entire hardware market.

Why Console Makers Are Breathing a Sigh of Relief
To understand why a 30% weekly bump is such a big deal, you have to understand how ugly 2026 has been for console sales. UK hardware sales were down 14.4% year-over-year by the end of July, dragged almost entirely by the PS5, which fell 32% in the same window. Xbox Series X/S was actually up a modest 3.1%. In the US, consoles just had their worst July since 2020 — the height of pandemic-era stock shortages.
The culprit is what Eurogamer has dubbed an “AI-fuelled RAMageddon”: spiralling component costs, driven largely by memory makers pivoting supply toward AI datacenters, have forced console price increases across the board. Newzoo analyst Ronan Patrick put the sting in perspective for The Game Business: adjusted for inflation, the PS5 is now 67% more expensive than it was at launch, and Xbox consoles are effectively twice the price they once were. Consoles have quietly gone from impulse purchases to considered ones.
That’s the backdrop against which GTA 6 just added a third to weekly hardware sales in one of the world’s biggest gaming markets — without the game even being out. For Sony and Microsoft, it’s validation of a bet both companies made when they locked in GTA 6 marketing deals: that this one title could do the work of an entire holiday lineup.

What This Means for GTA 6
First: launch week is going to be a hardware supernova. If a trailer can lift UK console sales by a third, imagine what November 19 does — a date that now doubles as a de facto console event for both platforms. Retailers are already warning of stock pressure, and the PS5 Pro sellouts suggest premium SKUs will be the first to vanish. If your console is on its last legs, the smart money buys hardware before the launch crunch, not during it — Amazon currently lists the PS5 console and Xbox Series X at retail pricing while stock holds.
Second: the ceiling is lower than fans hope. Newzoo’s Patrick tempers expectations — because of those inflation-driven price hikes, he expects GTA 6 and Call of Duty to deliver “an uptick in the install base,” but “nothing particularly massive.” People are buying, but they’re buying against the steepest real-terms console prices in modern history. The GTA 6 effect will be real, but it can’t fully repeal economics.
Third: Sony is going all-in on the moment. The State of Play that followed the reveal didn’t just show gameplay — it announced two limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers for PS5. Pair themed hardware with the biggest game of the generation and you have a textbook console-push playbook. Microsoft, for its part, gets to ride the same wave with zero effort, since GTA 6 launches day-one on Xbox Series X|S.
Finally: it’s a stress test for supply chains already on edge. Between the RAM shortage and hoarder behavior, the November window could get ugly for anyone who waits. Our Extended Look global release-times breakdown covers when you can actually start playing — and our full GTA 6 pre-order guide covers which edition to lock in first (spoiler: the Vintage Vice City Pack pre-order bonus is worth caring about).
The Bottom Line
A 33% PS5 sales jump and a 34% Xbox jump, in a down market, in one week, from a trailer — that’s the GTA 6 effect in its opening act. It confirms what everyone suspected: this isn’t a normal game launch, it’s a consumer event that moves the entire hardware market around it. The analysts are right that inflation-era pricing will cap how big the bump gets, and they’re right that the install-base gain will be “an uptick,” not a revolution. But when the biggest game on the planet meets the hungrier side of a starved console market, the next ten weeks are going to be very good for Sony, Microsoft, and whoever’s holding stock.
Ten weeks out, the scoreboard reads: one trailer, 50-plus million views, and a third of the UK console market moved. Now everyone in Leonida braces for what happens when the game itself shows up on November 19.
