Researchers confirmed the species using genetic data, and it’s the first new wild cat species to be identified in over 100 years, according to Reuters’ report on the discovery.
The details are as good as the headline. The tilcayo tiger cat measures roughly 18 inches (about 46 cm) long and weighs around 3 pounds (1.4 kg) — smaller than your average housecat — with a spotted coat and round ears. It belongs to the tiger-cat group found across much of South America, a lineage that earlier genetic studies had already suggested was hiding more species than biologists had names for.
And the origin story of the discovery is genuinely wild. Co-author Paola Nogales-Ascarrunz volunteers at a wildlife rehabilitation facility near La Paz, Bolivia. A local man had taken in a tiny cat he assumed was a kitten, feeding it rice and eggs until he could no longer care for it and surrendering it to the sanctuary. Nogales-Ascarrunz noticed something odd about the little “kitten” — and genetic testing confirmed it wasn’t just an unusual rescue. It was a species science had never documented. Per Reuters, one of the live individuals examined is a 10-year-old male now living at the Senda Verde Wildlife Sanctuary, and researchers say information on the species is currently limited to the two live cats they examined plus a small number of camera-trap records.

Rockstar has already shown off Leonida’s wild side in trailers and location art, from the wetlands of the Grassrivers to the backwaters of the Leonida Keys. A game world that already feels like it’s hiding something around every bend of the river fits an era where actual undiscovered predators are still turning up in 2026.
