GTA 6 NEWS · THE MANATEE MOMENT

GTA 6 and Fire Emblem Have a Weird Thing in Common — and It’s Manatees All the Way Down

Here is a sentence nobody had on their 2026 bingo card: two of the year’s biggest games are united by the sea cow. On one side, Grand Theft Auto 6 — whose newly revealed $400 collector’s box ships with, among other questionable treasures, a “Chunkee the Manatee” shot glass. On the other, Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, whose current fan-favorite story route features flesh-eating sea beasts that look like manatees gone very, very wrong. This week, Polygon connected the dots under the headline “Don’t have a (sea) cow, man” — and the timing is honestly a little bit perfect.

What Happened

The GTA 6 half of the story starts with the Goodtime State — Vice City Collection, the $399.99 box of Leonida-branded collectibles Rockstar revealed this week that famously doesn’t include the game. Among the eleven items is a Chunkee the Manatee shot glass — Chunkee being a character from Macca the Gator, the in-universe animated show Rockstar invented for GTA 6’s fictional Florida. As Polygon notes, the whole thing has “some serious BoJack Horseman vibes”: a cartoon mascot with its own merch line, living inside a game that will itself sell merch lines. And the manatee branding doesn’t stop at glassware. GTA 6’s promotional materials keep showing people wearing turquoise football jerseys emblazoned with MANATEES branding — presumably Leonida’s answer to the Miami Dolphins.

The Fire Emblem half is nastier and, depending on your taste, funnier. In Fortune’s Weave — the strategy epic that has quietly become one of 2026’s breakout releases — an early sequence on Dietrich’s route has the core trio rescuing Esmeralda from village cultists who have her tied up as a human sacrifice to appease the local sea beasts. These are not cuddly aquarium attractions: Polygon describes them as “nasty, carnivorous seals with bulbous dangly noses” — and one of them eats Esmeralda’s dad, a development she takes with frankly alarming calm. The scene has become one of the route’s signature moments, and it’s exactly the kind of weird the Fire Emblem fandom latches onto.

“Is it a mere coincidence that two of 2026’s biggest new releases both feature large, manatee-like marine creatures? Absolutely! But it’s still noteworthy nonetheless.” — Polygon

Why Manatees Are Secretly Perfect Vice City Material

Strip away the absurdity and the manatee actually makes complete sense for GTA 6’s Florida satire. The West Indian manatee is the Florida marine icon — the state’s official marine mammal, the star of a thousand “save the manatee” license plates, and the gentle, slow-moving, boat-propeller-endangered sea cow that every Floridian has a complicated relationship with. A turquoise MANATEES jersey is exactly the kind of loving regional detail Rockstar has been mining for Leonida since the first trailer: the gators, the flamingos, the airboats, the swamp-culture tchotchkes. Chunkee the Manatee — a chubby cartoon mascot slapped on a shot glass — is Florida kitsch rendered with surgical precision. You have seen this exact mug at a Gulf Coast gift shop. That’s the joke, and it’s a good one.

It also fits Rockstar’s merch strategy for GTA 6, which has leaned hard into in-world brands. The collector’s box doesn’t sell “GTA 6 stuff” — it sells Vice City stuff, objects that would plausibly exist on a shelf inside the game’s universe. That worldbuilding-first approach is why the box can skip the game entirely and still sell out, and why a mascot from a fictional cartoon inside a fictional state can headline a real $400 product. It’s the same play that had fans reselling free Tokyo Game Show shirts for $220 within hours — and the same one currently splitting the fandom down the middle over that $400 price tag.

And the moment isn’t limited to two games. As if on cue, Frontier Developments announced this week that the West Indian Manatee will make its franchise debut in Planet Zoo 2 when the sim launches October 13 on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X|S — complete with its own Animal Spotlight trailer. That’s three marquee 2026 releases making room for sirenians and their pinniped cousins in the space of a few weeks. Polygon’s writer, for her part, is calling for more: she wants 2027 to be “the year of seals, otters, manatees, and dugongs,” noting that outside of Pokémon’s Gen 1 good-boy Seel, marine mammals are weirdly rare in games. The sea cow renaissance starts now, apparently.

The sea beasts aren’t a one-scene gag, either. Per the game’s own lore — documented across community guides and the Fire Emblem wiki — the creatures haunt the story’s coastal chapters in escalating forms, up to and including “Cetus, the Sea Tyrant,” a legendary monster that attacked Dietrich’s boat bearing a mysterious crest. Esmeralda’s own father, the fisherman Sinza, is connected to the same waters. In a franchise best known for dragon-riding royalty and tactical grid combat, an entire marine-horror subplot built around manatee-coded monsters is exactly the kind of swing that has players calling Fortune’s Weave one of the freshest entries in years.

What This Means for GTA 6

The obvious question, and the fun one: will there actually be manatees in Leonida? Rockstar hasn’t shown any in the trailers, so to be clear, this is pure speculation — but it’s speculation with legs. GTA 6’s map is confirmed to include the Grassrivers wetlands and the Leonida Keys, both prime real-world manatee habitat, and Rockstar’s leaked map work already names an Alligator Farm among the landmarks. A studio that animates individual fingers and weather-reactive NPCs is not going to skip the gentle sea cows idling through its warm coastal waters. If Chunkee merch exists in the real world before the game even ships, an in-game manatee cameo feels less like a hope and more like a foregone conclusion.

The bigger takeaway is what the manatee moment says about GTA 6’s cultural gravity. When the biggest strategy game of the year and the biggest zoo sim of the year can be folded into a GTA 6 news cycle — when a shot glass in a collector’s box becomes connective tissue across entire genres — you get a sense of just how completely the November 19 launch is orbiting the industry. Every game is now, in some small way, in GTA 6’s ocean. Even the wildlife coverage is downstream of Vice City: it was only 2024 that scientists named a new cat species before Rockstar could finish the game, and the animal story of this week is, once again, GTA-adjacent.

As for the box itself — if a Chunkee the Manatee shot glass sounds like your kind of tat, our full breakdown of the Vice City Collection lists all eleven items, and the game it doesn’t include is still available the old-fashioned way: pre-order GTA 6 for PS5 on Amazon or lock in the Xbox Series X|S version here. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S. Until then: don’t have a cow, man. A sea cow, that is.
