Nintendo’s Boss Was Asked About GTA 6 on Switch 2 — Her Answer Says Plenty by Saying Nothing
When GTA 6 arrives on November 19, 2026, it will be playable in exactly two places: PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. PC players will wait — that is Rockstar tradition at this point. But what about the Nintendo Switch 2, the 23-million-selling console that has quietly spent 2026 proving it can hang with the big dogs? This week, someone finally asked the question at the top. Devon Pritchard, president of Nintendo of America, sat down with Variety for a wide-ranging interview about her first year running the company’s Western operations — and when GTA 6 came up, she delivered the most carefully engineered non-answer in gaming. Then Polygon, GameSpot and IGN all picked it up, because when the president of Nintendo says anything about GTA 6, it travels.
What Happened: The Quote
The moment comes from Variety’s interview with Pritchard, published ahead of GTA 6’s launch window. Asked directly whether the Switch 2 — a console Variety notes “certainly has the horsepower” to host an M-rated GTA 6 — will get the biggest game of the decade, Pritchard kept it clinical:
“That’s going to be a conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar, but nothing to announce on my end at this time.”
Read it once as a shrug. Read it twice and notice what it is not: it is not a no. Pritchard — who took over from longtime Nintendo of America chief Doug Bowser in January — framed the Switch 2’s early days in the same conversation with the line “we’re just at the beginning of seeing what Nintendo Switch 2 can do,” and made a point of saying she wants the console to prove it isn’t just for kids and families, but can “provide a diversity in terms of the types of experiences that you can have on the system.” A platform holder angling for broader, grittier third-party support, asked about the grittiest third-party game in existence, declining to close the door. That is the whole story — and it is genuinely the first time a Nintendo boss has addressed GTA 6 on Switch 2 on the record.
Context: Why This Question Even Makes Sense
Five years ago, asking about a mainline GTA on a Nintendo console would have been a joke. In 2026, it is a legitimate industry question, and the numbers explain why. The Switch 2 launched in June 2025 and has already sold more than 23 million units. It runs Cyberpunk 2077 — the game that famously melted last-gen consoles — and the recent Witcher 3 remaster, as IGN noted in its own coverage of Pritchard’s comments. And this fall, Activision brings Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 to the system: the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo console in over a decade, and the clearest signal yet that Nintendo wants the AAA M-rated crowd it spent two console generations mostly ignoring. Pritchard’s own framing in the interview leaned into it — “We have historically said that Nintendo is for ages 5 to 95,” she said, and that the diversity of experiences on the platform “is really important for us.”
Rockstar, for its part, is not a stranger to Nintendo hardware. L.A. Noire, the original Red Dead Redemption, and GTA: The Trilogy – The Definitive Edition have all shipped on Switch — the 2021 Trilogy release is even playable on Switch 2 today, as GameSpot pointed out. But the pattern stops dead at the modern era: no Red Dead Redemption 2, no GTA 5, nothing from this century’s heavyweights. And Take-Two guards that platform list jealously — just weeks ago it shut down a fan-made GTA 5 Switch port with a cease-and-desist days before launch. If GTA 5 couldn’t get an official Switch release in fourteen years on the market, the bar for GTA 6 on Switch 2 was never going to be cleared by horsepower alone. Worth remembering, too, that GTA 6 is launching on the Xbox Series S — the least powerful console of this generation — so raw power has never been the deciding factor. Pipeline, priorities and business strategy are.

What This Means for GTA 6
First: nothing about launch changes. GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — that is confirmed, locked, and five weeks out. No Switch 2 version has ever been hinted at, teased, or leaked from any credible source, and Pritchard’s answer confirms Nintendo has nothing in the pipeline to announce. If you were secretly hoping for a surprise port reveal in a future Direct: the president of Nintendo of America just told you, in the politest possible way, to stop. It is also worth noticing how every non-PS5/Xbox GTA 6 platform story of the past month has gone — the “Xbox secures exclusive cloud streaming rights” report lasted barely a day before Xbox’s own chief strategy officer publicly shot it down. The platform rumor mill is running hotter than the actual platform news.
Second: the door is technically open — but the queue in front of it is long. “A conversation for Take-Two and Rockstar” is diplomatese for “not our call,” and it is true: Nintendo could beg and it would still be Take-Two’s roadmap that decides. That roadmap currently has a known order. Console launch first, then PC — which Strauss Zelnick himself says is “becoming more and more important” to Take-Two, without a date attached even there. A hypothetical Switch 2 port would sit behind both, plus the online mode expected in 2027, in any realistic sequencing. If it ever happened, we are talking years, not months — and it would arrive, as these things always do, as a bespoke downport announcement at a Nintendo Direct that breaks the internet. Until Rockstar says a word, treat every “GTA 6 on Switch 2” headline as what this one is: a platform holder politely declining to speculate.
Third: Nintendo’s November is GTA 6-adjacent whether it likes it or not. The same Variety interview spends most of its length on the Legend of Zelda’s 40th anniversary — the Ocarina of Time remake landing November 5, a Zelda-inspired concert series, the live-action movie coming in April 2027. Variety itself notes the Ocarina remake is “the only high-profile game brave enough to go up against” GTA 6’s launch window, a standoff we mapped when Nintendo called GTA 6’s bluff and picked November 5. Pop culture has already fused the two universes — SNL literally staged a Link vs. Jason debate and called it “the Barbenheimer of video games.” Pritchard’s line about the anniversary plans — “anything we’re going to do is going to be deliberate and thoughtful” — applies equally to the GTA 6 question. Nintendo knows exactly how big the game looming over its flagship franchise’s birthday is. It is simply choosing, deliberately and thoughtfully, to let Rockstar do the talking.

So where does that leave Switch 2 owners? Exactly where PS5 owners were in 2013 and PC owners are now: watching, waiting, and reading tea leaves. The realistic playbook says enjoy the console’s absurd 2026 lineup, watch the brave souls launching anywhere near GTA 6 from a safe distance, and play GTA 6 the way it will actually exist on November 19 — on a PS5 or Xbox. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S: pre-order the PS5 version on Amazon or grab the Xbox Series X|S edition here. And if a Switch 2 port is ever genuinely on the table, you will read it here the minute Take-Two’s “conversation” produces an announcement.
