Profile
Jason Duval is the other half of GTA 6’s protagonist duo — the yang to Lucia’s yin. He’s a man who’s been running from his own potential his entire life. Smart enough to do better. Capable enough to succeed legitimately. But always pulled back into the life by circumstance, loyalty, or his own stubbornness.
Jason grew up around grifters and crooks. The streets were his classroom and survival was his curriculum. After a troubled teens period, he tried to go straight — joined the Army, served his time, tried to become someone different. But the military didn’t erase who he was. It just made him more dangerous.
After the Army, Jason ended up in the Leonida Keys — the tropical island chain at the southern tip of the state. He fell in with local drug runners, doing what he knows best: moving product, solving problems, staying invisible. It’s not the life he wanted, but it’s the life that kept him fed.
Then Lucia walks out of prison and into his life. Meeting her could be the best or worst thing that ever happens to him. Jason knows how he’d like it to turn out — a future, a real life, something beyond the next score. But right now, it’s hard to tell. Because when an easy score goes wrong in Leonida, the consequences stretch across the entire state.
Key Relationships
Lucia Caminos
Partner in love and crime. She’s the reason he wants to go straight — and the reason he can’t.
Cal Hampton
Best friend and conspiracy theorist. Cal monitors Coast Guard comms from his couch — Jason’s eyes and ears in the Keys.
Brian Heder
Associate and fixer. Brian operates the Keys network that Jason works through.
Vice City Connection
Jason’s arc directly parallels Tommy Vercetti’s origin — a man with a criminal past trying to operate in Vice City’s underworld. But where Tommy was sent by the mob, Jason is there by choice (or at least by inertia). Where Tommy was cold and methodical, Jason is warmer and more conflicted.
His Army background adds a dimension Tommy never had — military training, discipline (when he chooses to use it), and the PTSD that comes from serving. Jason is the GTA protagonist who could have been a hero if the world had given him a fair shot.
The Keys setting — where Jason operates — is a new area for GTA. The original Vice City focused on the urban core. Jason’s story expands the world to the island chain, the swamps, and the waterways that make Leonida feel like a living, breathing state rather than just a city.
Trivia
- Jason’s military background is confirmed in Rockstar’s official character description — one of the few GTA protagonists with confirmed Army service.
- His name ‘Duval’ may reference Duval County — a real Florida county (Jacksonville area). In GTA 6, Vice-Dale County is the game’s equivalent.
- Trailer 2 shows Jason in multiple settings: driving with one hand, carrying a six-pack, at an ATM, during a store robbery — suggesting a deeply immersive, slice-of-life approach to his character.
- The ‘easy score goes wrong’ setup echoes Tommy Vercetti’s ambushed drug deal — GTA’s favorite way to kick off a story.
- Jason and Lucia’s dynamic — a couple forced to rely on each other — is the first romantic partnership between GTA protagonists.
- He operates out of the Leonida Keys, GTA 6’s version of the Florida Keys.
- Fans have compared Jason to Neil McCauley (Robert De Niro) from Heat — a professional criminal who wants a normal life but can’t escape the game.
