GTA 5’s Hot Dog Vendors Finally Work — Because a Modder Did What Rockstar Wouldn’t
For thirteen years, Los Santos has had a silent scandal running along its beachfront: hot dog carts with nobody behind them. The props are there. The umbrellas are there. The little grills are there. What has never been there is the ability to actually buy a hot dog — a feature that worked perfectly fine in Grand Theft Auto IV back in 2008. This week, PC Gamer’s Joshua Wolens — the man on a self-appointed quest to mod GTA 5 into “a PC version of GTA 6” one daily experiment at a time — fixed it. Sort of. With consequences. The Working Hotdog Vendors mod lets you stroll up to the meat-slingers of Los Santos and hand over five dollars for “some sort of fleshy tube in a bun,” and it is somehow one of the most delightful things happening in the GTA fandom while we all wait for November 19.
What Happened
PC Gamer’s latest installment of the ongoing “Los Santos Customs” mod diary is exactly what the headline promises: Wolens installed the Working Hotdog Vendors mod from GTA5-Mods, and the beach vendors of Los Santos now sell hot dogs for five bucks a piece — exactly like the Liberty City carts of GTA 4. The dogs restore a bit of health. The transaction works. The system Rockstar left on the cutting room floor in 2013 is now, in the year of our Lord 2026, fully operational.
The evidence, Wolens argues, suggests Rockstar intended hot dog purchasing to carry over from GTA 4 — the vendor models and cart props are dotted around the map as if waiting for a systems designer who never showed up. Why it never shipped is “a mystery,” he writes, before taking a swing at Rockstar’s priorities:
“Dundee was busy working on horse testicles, or whatever it is they do up there, and forgot.” — Joshua Wolens, PC Gamer
For the record, the mod’s own description backs the “Rockstar never finished it” theory: the feature “was supposed to be implemented by Rockstar” but never was, and community modders have been patching the gap for years — remakes, Enhanced-edition versions, and even a GitHub script that reintroduces both hot dog and burger vendors from GTA 4. The carts themselves, per GTA Wiki, have simply sat “unoccupied” for the entire lifespan of one of the best-selling games ever made.

A Five-Dollar Slice of GTA 4 History
If you never played Grand Theft Auto IV, it’s worth knowing how odd this omission is. Liberty City in 2008 was full of working street food: hot dog vendors on street corners, burgers at the iconic stands, all of it purchasable for pocket change, all of it restoring your health in a pinch mid-chase. It was a tiny system, but it made the city feel inhabited — Nico Bellic was a man who existed in New York City’s skin, snacking on the same dirty water dogs as everyone else.
GTA 5 (2013) kept the props and deleted the behavior. Every cart is an empty storefront, every grill cold. Players heal through the snack inventory wheel and vending machines instead — functional, but never quite the same as walking up to a stranger on Vespucci Beach and ordering lunch. For over a decade the fandom has treated this as a running joke about how much of GTA 5’s world is facade: the doors that don’t open, the stores that don’t sell, the carts that don’t cook. Now, at least on PC, one more piece of the set dressing is real.
And it’s arriving in the most 2026 way possible. Wolens’ hot dog pilgrimage is the same daily series that already gave us GTA 5 as a golf simulator, Crazy Taxi rebuilt inside Los Santos, and night-only UFO sightings over the Vinewood hills. With the actual GTA 6 release date locked and the marketing machine fully spun up, the series has become the fandom’s collective coping mechanism: if Vice City won’t get here faster, we’ll bolt it onto Los Santos one mod at a time.
Hot Dogs, Random Teleports, and Plummeting Bodyguards
The best part of the installment is what happens when the mod collides with the rest of Wolens’ teetering mod stack. Because he’s also running the random-teleport mod that yanks him somewhere new every 50 seconds, buying a hot dog becomes a game of chance: “One moment you’ll be handing over your money, the next you will be perched atop the not-Hollywood sign, lazily chowing down on your grub.”
It gets worse, or better. The celebrity mod he installed earlier assigns him bodyguards, who “keep manifesting in thin air next to you before plunging to their deaths” — a detail Wolens reports with the calm of a man who has seen too much. Crucially: “This does not interrupt the hot dog consumption process.” The man eats through it. That’s dedication to lunch.
“I have filled a yawning void in the soul of Los Santos. I have returned the heart to a heartless world.” — Wolens, on hot dogs
“The hot dogs heal you, just like in real life,” he adds, and honestly, after a decade of energy-bar snacks, having the beach food cart actually do something again lands like a small act of restoration. His verdict on the whole experiment: “It’s great. GTA 5 should have been like this the whole time.”

What This Means for GTA 6
The obvious question, and the one Wolens ends on: will GTA 6 let you buy a hot dog? His money-quote hopes it will — “I can only hope that GTA 6, with its budget of ‘roughly Saddam Hussein’s gold bullion reserves,’ will let you fully experience hot dogs.” Given everything Rockstar has shown of Leonida — the packed boardwalks, the beach strips, the sprawling Vice City waterfront, NPCs that react to weather and wardrobe and, infamously, to what you’re holding — shipping a living world where the food carts are once again hollow props would be a genuinely funny self-own. The bar is on the floor: charge five bucks, restore some health, let us feel like locals.
There’s also a real question about whether this kind of fix stays possible for GTA 6 at all. Rockstar’s new modding guidelines, published this month, crack down hard on story mods, third-party IP, and unauthorized monetization — but classic single-player script mods like Working Hotdog Vendors are precisely the category that remains legitimate under the new rules. If anything, a harmless hot dog vendor is the poster child for modding Rockstar can live with: it restores cut content, breaks nothing, monetizes nothing, and sells no story. Expect the first weeks after launch to be a race between dataminers finding every half-finished system in GTA 6 and modders quietly finishing them.
Until then, the wait continues — and there are worse ways to spend it than PC Gamer speedrunning chaos mods. If you’ve exhausted your own patience, our list of things to do while waiting for GTA 6 has you covered, and if you’re not pre-ordered yet, now’s the time: grab GTA 6 for PS5 on Amazon or lock in the Xbox Series X|S version here. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — and somewhere in Leonida, we can only pray, a hot dog cart is waiting.
