GTA 6 NEWS · CIRCANA’S ALL-TIME RECORD

GTA 6 Breaks Circana’s All-Time Purchase Intent Record — Nearly 1 in 3 US Gamers Are In

Grand Theft Auto VI doesn’t go on sale for another three weeks, and it has already broken a record that no game — not a GTA, not a Call of Duty, not a mainline Zelda — has ever touched. Market research firm Circana’s latest data puts GTA 6’s purchase intent at 29% among US console and PC gamers, and as GameSpot reports, that is the highest purchase intent Circana has ever measured for any game in the history of the metric.

Twenty-nine percent means nearly one in three console and PC gamers in the United States plans to buy GTA 6. Circana analyst Mat Piscatella calls the game “a rare cultural and commercial moment” for gaming — and the data dump that arrived this week explains exactly why the entire entertainment industry has spent a year rearranging its calendar around a single Thursday in November.

What Happened: The Record, in Plain Numbers

Circana’s new figures show GTA 6 holding 29% purchase intent among US console and PC gamers — the firm’s all-time high for any game it has ever tracked. Piscatella attributes the demand to the 13-year gap between GTA 5 and GTA 6, the longest wait between mainline entries in franchise history. “Demand is expected to extend beyond software sales to include consoles, accessories, and gaming subscriptions as consumers prepare for launch,” he said.

That halo effect is the real story inside the record. GTA 6 launches on November 19 — just before Black Friday and the start of the holiday shopping season — and Piscatella expects the release to drive additional sales of PS5 and Xbox Series X|S consoles on top of the software itself. “Its anticipation and popularity reinforces the growing influence of video games on the broader entertainment and consumer technology markets,” he added. Circana’s study measured console and PC users; the game itself is confirmed only for console at launch, with a PC edition widely expected to follow in early 2027.

The Money Already Moving Before a Single Copy Ships

The record is not an isolated stat — it sits on top of a preorder mountain that has been growing all year. According to Sensor Tower, GTA 6 has already sold about 7 million units, driving $675 million in revenue — up from the 4.5 million copies and $450 million the same firm counted at the end of August. Sensor Tower believes the game could reach 25 million preorders and $2 billion in revenue before November 19 even arrives — a projection we first covered in September, when roughly 89% of preorders were going to the $99.99 Ultimate Edition in a split that also kicked off the Xbox-vs-PlayStation preorder debate.

The hardware market is already responding. US PS5 sales jumped 22% in September — Circana’s own numbers — as players positioned themselves for launch, and that was before the purchase-intent record was even announced. If 29% of US console and PC gamers follow through, November’s hardware charts could look just as lopsided as the software one.

Why the Calendar Cleared Out — and Why Circana Calls the Panic Overblown

GTA 6 is the only mainstream game releasing on November 19, and per GameSpot’s reporting, no major release is scheduled within five days on either side of it. Publishers spent most of 2026 fleeing the blast radius — we documented the wreckage when GTA 6 turned October into a release bloodbath — and Hollywood steered around the date too, with the closest tentpole being the new Hunger Games movie landing the very next day, its director openly joking about working around the launch.

Piscatella thinks the industry flinched too hard. Speaking to GamesBeat, he said “everyone’s just scared” of releasing near GTA 6 — but “I guess I get it, I just think it’s completely overblown. A lot of these moves and shifting away just seems more irrational than rational.” As GTA BOOM lays out, his case is simple: not every one of the roughly 49 million PS5 and Xbox Series owners in the US will buy GTA 6, Switch households can’t play it at all, and the players who skip it will still spend on something else.

History backs him up. When GTA 5 launched in September 2013, it took more than half of all US software dollars that month — and Madden NFL 25, NBA 2K14, and FIFA 14 still charted right behind it. Red Dead Redemption 2 set October records in 2018 and Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 still took the month’s top spot. The irony of the 2026 stampede: by fleeing November, publishers jammed every other month full — leaving GTA 6’s own window the most open real estate on the calendar, shared only with stragglers like Zelda: Ocarina of Time on November 5 and a single (currently unannounced) Devolver title brave enough to take November 19 itself.

What This Means for GTA 6

1. Demand at this scale spills past software. That is the core of Piscatella’s read: consoles, accessories, and gaming subscriptions all ride the wave as people prepare for launch. With the release landing days before Black Friday, GTA 6 is positioned as this holiday’s hardware catalyst — though anyone buying a console specifically for it is in for sticker shock, as consoles today are more expensive than ever (our running PS5 deal coverage tracks the cheaper routes in).

2. The record sets the floor for launch-night chaos. Nearly a third of US console and PC gamers, preloading a 210 GB download that unlocks on November 12, all aimed at the same midnight. If purchase intent converts even close to historically, November 19 becomes the single biggest concurrent launch event gaming has ever hosted — the kind of night that already took down Netflix and Twitch during the trailer premieres.

3. Even a record-breaker won’t fix the industry’s structural problems. GameSpot’s own framing comes with the caveat experts keep repeating: GTA 6 may lift hardware, accessories, and subscription sales across the board, but the industry’s deeper issues — rising costs, studio closures, painful hardware pricing — remain. “A rare cultural and commercial moment” can carry a holiday season; it can’t restructure a market alone.

4. For players, nothing about the plan changes. GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — confirmed and locked. The Bottom Line

Three weeks before release, GTA 6 has broken Circana’s all-time purchase intent record with 29% of US console and PC gamers planning to buy it, $675 million already banked on roughly 7 million preorders, and a credible path to 25 million copies and $2 billion before launch day. Piscatella calls it a rare cultural and commercial moment; the rest of the industry called it a reason to vacate November entirely — which, he argues, they overdid. Either way, the record is now official: no game has ever been wanted this badly, this far ahead of release.
