GTA 6 Review Scores Will Drop Before Launch — Here’s When They Could Land

For months, a corner of the internet has argued that GTA 6 might launch with no reviews at all — that Rockstar would skip the critic cycle entirely and let the biggest game ever made speak for itself. That theory is now dead. Insider Gaming reports that GTA 6’s reviews will go live before the November 19 release, and per GameSpot’s breakdown, the review-copy pipeline is already warming up.

The missing piece is the exact date — and that part is being kept deliberately vague. Insider Gaming says it has actually learned the preliminary embargo date but is holding it back because it’s “subject to change in the run-up” to release. So: scores are coming before launch, the press will have them in hand well in advance, and the only mystery left is which day in November the dam breaks.

What Happened: Review Copies Before Halloween

The sourcing here comes from two directions. First, Insider Gaming’s report that the embargo will expire ahead of November 19. Second, the track record of insider NateTheHate, who said in mid-October that Rockstar will send GTA 6 review copies to journalists before the end of October — which, as GameSpot notes, means “any time now.” If that holds, reviewers will have the game three-plus weeks before the rest of us, an unusually generous head start for a title this radioactive.

The community is already treating it as live. A thread titled “Review Codes for GTA VI are being distributed” is making the rounds on ResetEra and Reddit’s gaming-leaks communities, and as Notebookcheck lays out, the schedule settles months of speculation about how Rockstar would handle critics at all — including a May claim from Brazilian journalist Pedro Henrique Lutti Lippe that the press would be flown to an undisclosed location to test the game under supervision, precisely to prevent leaks. That plan, evidently, never materialized: standard review copies are going out instead. NateTheHate’s October target is getting taken seriously because his track record on Rockstar specifics — release timing, announcement windows — has been right often enough that the leak communities treat him as a source, not a guesser.

What History Says: Rockstar’s Day-Before Playbook

If you want to pencil in a date, Rockstar’s own history is the best guide — and it points to November 18, the day before launch. When GTA 5 released on September 17, 2013, reviews were published starting September 16. For 2018’s Red Dead Redemption 2, the sequel to Rockstar’s other mega-franchise, reviews also went live exactly one day before release. Two launches, two day-before embargoes.

GameSpot adds the necessary caveat, and we’ll underline it: nothing is confirmed at this stage, and Rockstar could break its own pattern. A game with this much preload-week theater — preloads open November 12 for a 210 GB download, as we covered in our file size breakdown — might want reviews landing in that window, when millions have already paid and the rest are deciding. A day-before drop (November 18) keeps maximum control. A week-early drop would be a genuine shock.

The Leak Elephant in the Room

Here’s what makes early review copies genuinely wild: GTA 6 is coming off the most sustained leak campaign any game has ever suffered. For weeks, the Cyberleak saga dumped everything from 25-minute gameplay reels to a full-build ultimatum tied to a crypto scheme, and that was before the leaker’s coin crashed and the leaks finally sputtered out mid-October — a saga we charted from the first 25-minute drop onward. Handing near-final builds to dozens of outlets three weeks early, after all that, is a statement of confidence — or a bet that the worst already leaked.

It’s also consistent with how Rockstar has handled the fall information avalanche generally. Press access has been widening for weeks: Edge magazine’s 16-page GTA 6 cover story from inside Rockstar North goes on sale October 29 and hits free the same day, as we covered in our Edge #430 preview — and the last time a major outlet dropped a GTA 6 cover story, Game Informer’s app straight-up crashed under the traffic. Reviews before launch would be the final gate opening.

What This Means for GTA 6

1. The scores will land while your preorder is still editable. That’s the real function of a pre-launch embargo for a game like this. Reviews hitting before November 19 — possibly while preloads are already crawling along at 210 GB — gives fence-sitters one final data point. With nearly 1 in 3 US gamers already planning to buy, the scores won’t decide the game’s fate; they’ll just set the tone for the biggest launch week in entertainment history.

2. Expectations are already being managed down — by the press itself. Insider Gaming’s own podcast crew made headlines arguing GTA 6 may “not justify the immense hype” and predicting Metacritic scores in the 83–87 range, a take their audience met with torches. Whether or not that lands, the review conversation will be less “is it good” (it will be) and more “is it the best-reviewed game ever” — GTA 5 sits at a 97 Metacritic, a number GTA 6 has to at least approach before the discourse turns. For context on how rare that club is: only a handful of games in history have ever touched 97 — GTA 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and all-timers like Ocarina of Time and Super Mario Galaxy. Anything short of that tier, for this game, will read as a story.

3. There’s an awards-season undercurrent. A pre-launch review window matters beyond November: we’ve already dug into GTA 6’s Game Awards eligibility tightrope, and a wide pre-launch critical consensus gives voters and pundits a full month of score-chatter before ballots. Reviews landing November 18 would be perfectly staged for it.

4. For players, the plan doesn’t change. GTA 6 releases November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — confirmed, locked, embargo or no embargo. If you’d rather not wait for a number at the bottom of a review, you can pre-order GTA 6 for PS5 on Amazon or grab the Xbox Series X|S version here — our pre-order guide covers the editions, and your backlog can survive the wait with our countdown list.

The Bottom Line

GTA 6’s reviews will arrive before the game does — that much is now reported, if not officially dated. History says November 18, the day before launch, exactly as GTA 5 and Red Dead Redemption 2 did it. The only open questions are whether Rockstar repeats the pattern and whether three weeks of early review copies can stay un-leaked in a year when nothing else has. Either way, the final stretch of the GTA 6 cycle now has a shape: preload November 12, reviews mid-month, launch November 19, Thanksgiving verdict a week later. Buckle up.
