GTA 6 NEWS · THE CONSOLE WAR OVER PREORDERS
Xbox Says Its GTA 6 Preorders Match Its Console Market Share — Pushing Back on the PS5 Dominance Report
Grand Theft Auto VI is eight weeks from launch, and the console war has entered its spreadsheet era. This week, The Verge reported that sources inside Xbox say GTA 6 preorders are “heavily skewed” toward PlayStation 5 — a claim framed as yet another alarm bell for Microsoft’s platform. Within hours, Xbox’s Chief Strategy Officer Matthew Ball did something executives almost never do: he posted the company’s internal read on the numbers, publicly, in a reply on X. The takeaway? Xbox says GTA 6 is “breaking records” on its platform and that its preorder share is simply tracking its share of the console market. Which, depending on how you do the math, might confirm the PS5 skew and dispute it at the exact same time.
What Happened
The claim kicked off inside a much bigger story. Tom Warren of The Verge published a report on this week’s sweeping Xbox layoffs and studio reorganization — the shakeup that handed Halo to Activision, of all studios — and buried in it was a line about the biggest game of the generation. “Sources at Xbox tell me that GTA 6 pre-orders are heavily skewed toward PS5, ringing yet more alarm bells about the platform,” Warren wrote, per IGN’s reporting. In a week already full of bad Xbox news, that sentence traveled fast.
Enter Matthew Ball. Rather than issuing a boilerplate statement, Xbox’s CSO replied directly on X, and the full message — first flagged by IGN and quickly picked up by Push Square — is worth reading in full, because every clause is doing work:
“Tom, we are very happy with GTA VI pre-orders. The title is breaking records for XBOX, we expect even more records will be broken throughout the fall, and our internal analysis shows our share of pre-orders to be matching our share of the console market.” — Matthew Ball, Chief Strategy Officer, Xbox
Three claims in one breath: GTA 6 is record-breaking on Xbox, more records are coming this fall, and Xbox’s slice of the preorder pie looks exactly the way its slice of the hardware pie has always looked. No numbers were attached. Neither Rockstar nor Take-Two has commented, and frankly, they almost certainly never will — the only parties who know the real split are Rockstar, Sony, and Microsoft.

The Math Problem With “Heavily Skewed”
Here’s the fun part: Ball’s statement and Warren’s reporting can both be true at the same time. Sony has sold more than 95 million PS5 consoles as of June 30, while Microsoft hasn’t disclosed Xbox Series X|S sales in years. Analysts widely estimate the PS5 is outselling the Xbox Series family by at least 2:1, and Push Square’s own math — using estimates of roughly 100 million PS5s against around 35 million Xbox Series consoles — suggests a proportional preorder split of about 3:1 in PlayStation’s favor.
So if Xbox’s preorder share is “matching its share of the console market,” that still means there are likely two to three times as many GTA 6 preorders on PS5 as on Xbox Series X|S. IGN made exactly this point: if the 2:1 hardware ratio holds, PlayStation is sitting on double the preorders. Xbox can be genuinely delighted with its numbers — a record-breaking performance against a smaller install base — while PlayStation still runs away with the absolute count. Both executives can be telling the truth, and console-war Twitter can keep fighting about it forever.
This is also round two of the skirmish. Back in June, social posts built on IGN’s affiliate-link data claimed PS5 was outrunning Xbox on GTA 6 preorders by as much as 8:1 — a figure Microsoft pushed back on at the time. Windows Central and Mashable both noted the obvious caveat then, and it still applies: affiliate clicks from a single outlet are a terrible proxy for actual sales. Nobody outside the three companies has seen real transaction data. The Verge’s sourcing (“sources at Xbox”) is a different, more credible animal than a link-tracker ratio — which is probably why Ball responded to this one personally.
Why Sony’s Fingerprint Is on Every GTA 6 Billboard
If preorders do lean PlayStation, nobody involved can act surprised. Sony has spent heavily to make GTA 6 feel like a PS5 exclusive even though it isn’t one. Official marketing leans on the PS5 version of the game, the console shows up in GTA 6 promo materials, and PlayStation even shipped a custom GTA 6 user interface for PS5 as part of the partnership. The PlayStation app’s logo got a GTA 6-themed reskin, complete with pale palm fronds. Sony’s blog has been quietly schooling players on how GTA 6 will use the DualSense speaker and haptic feedback.
And that’s before the hardware: a line of limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense controllers hit pre-order this summer (and promptly hit discount-code territory within weeks). Every piece of that machinery funnels GTA 6 hype toward the PS5 version of the game. Rockstar’s own marketing blitz — from a $975,000 “Welcome to Vice City” sign on the Kaseya Center to a Netflix extended look — sells the game; Sony’s money makes sure the shelf it sits on is blue.
The Verge’s report folded the preorder line into a darker narrative: that the Xbox “reset” under new CEO Asha Sharma might be preparing the division to be spun off or run as a subsidiary. That’s speculation in the report, not confirmed strategy — but it explains why a single sentence about preorder splits stung enough to draw a C-suite reply within hours.

What This Means for GTA 6
Zoom out from the platform squabbling and the story is absurd in the best way: two console makers are publicly arguing over who gets to sell more copies of what is already one of the most pre-ordered entertainment products ever made. Analysts at Sensor Tower have projected as many as 25 million preorders by November 19 — roughly $2 billion in revenue before a single review goes live — and their data shows about 89% of preorders are for the $99.99 Ultimate Edition. Notably, Xbox players who do preorder go premium at an even higher rate than PlayStation players: 90% to 88.5%, per the firm’s numbers. A smaller crowd, but a whale-heavy one.
For Rockstar and Take-Two, the split barely matters — every copy on every platform goes through them. For the industry, it matters enormously: the release is already clearing October’s release calendar like a hurricane, rival studios are openly bracing for the impact, HR departments are watching November 19 PTO requests spike, and even the $400 collector’s box that doesn’t include the game is selling out. Retailers have warned they may not have enough consoles to meet GTA 6-fueled demand this fall — which, again, cuts in Sony’s favor purely on install-base math.
And for players? Nothing here changes the plan. GTA 6 launches November 19, 2026 on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S — same date, same game, whether the preorder ratio ends up 2:1, 3:1, or something that makes Matthew Ball delete a post. If you haven’t locked in a copy yet, our full GTA 6 pre-order guide breaks down every edition, and you can pre-order GTA 6 for PS5 on Amazon or grab the Xbox Series X|S version here. Just don’t expect either company to publish the receipts. The real numbers arrive November 19, and they’re going to be enormous on both sides.
