GTA 6 NEWS · LAUNCH DAY FEVER

America Is Already Booking November 19 Off for GTA 6 — and the HR Data Proves It

For months, the anecdotes have been everywhere: Reddit posts about managers instantly guessing why someone requested November 19 off, group chats coordinating PTO like a heist crew. Now the receipts are in. BambooHR — the HR software company behind payroll and time-off systems for more than 30,000 companies — has released data showing that paid-time-off requests for November 19, 2026, the day GTA 6 launches, are running well above normal. As in, measurably, reproducibly above normal.

We’re still two months out from launch, and the US workforce is apparently already filing paperwork to vanish into Leonida. GameSpot reported the findings this week after BambooHR shared its internal data in a memo, and the numbers back up what every GTA forum has been claiming since pre-orders opened: this launch is shaping up to be a cultural event, the kind that empties offices.

What Happened

BambooHR analyzed paid time off requests from active US employees across its platform and found that PTO requests for the third Thursday of November this year — launch day — are running 9% to 17% above historical averages for that weekday in recent years. And that’s with the data pulled while the release was still ten weeks away, as Money noted when it first reported the figures.

Here’s the part that makes this more than a fun blip: the company says the signal is consistent “at every checkpoint we can measure.” That’s stats-speak for this isn’t noise. When millions of employee records across tens of thousands of companies all lean the same direction on one specific Thursday in November, something is pulling on the calendar. BambooHR stopped short of naming the cause — it acknowledged it can’t definitively say GTA 6 is the reason — but described the pattern as a “real, reproducible signal.” GameSpot, for its part, gamely ticked through the other things November 19 has to offer (an early-access game launch, a couple of celebrity birthdays, some very niche historical anniversaries) before landing on the obvious suspect.

The anecdotes stacking up underneath the data are just as good. Money surfaced a Reddit user who asked for November 19 and 20 off back in July — and whose manager immediately assumed it was for GTA 6, approved it, then booked the same days off himself. A motorsports shop in California went further: facing a wave of time-off requests, it decided to simply close for the day on November 19. That’s where we are. Small businesses are treating a video game launch like a federal holiday.

There’s also a practical logic to the Thursday timing that GameSpot flagged: if you’re taking the 19th off anyway, who’s going back for one lone Friday? And with a playthrough of GTA 6 reportedly able to stretch past 80 hours, a four-day weekend is barely a start. BambooHR didn’t have data for that Friday — yet — but give it a few more payroll cycles.

This Always Happens With GTA — But Never Like This

Gamers calling in sick on launch day is the oldest joke in the industry — it dates back to dial-up era. But there’s a difference between meme sickies and what the spreadsheet is showing now. The GTA franchise has sold nearly 475 million copies lifetime per Take-Two’s own numbers, and GTA 6 has already banked more than 5.2 million pre-orders per Money’s reporting. When a product with that kind of installed mania finally ships, the whole culture bends around it — streaming platforms plan around it, other publishers flee its release window, and apparently, so does the national time-off calendar.

We’ve already watched the ripple effects stack up all year. October turned into a release-date bloodbath as studios scrambled out of GTA 6’s blast radius — a pile-up so extreme that even a scrappy soulslike dove into the chaos anyway, as we covered. The launch-day ecosystem is forming around November 19 like shops boarding up before a hurricane: Twitch’s CEO expects the online mode to swallow 2027 whole, Spotify has been teasing a Rockstar collaboration on actual billboards, and even the soundtrack got the full pop-star treatment — a 34-track original album lands the same day, featuring names from Travis Scott to Keith Richards. Fittingly, that album will ship on a physical disc — which, as GameSpot notes, is more than the game itself can say.

One honest caveat, because we deal in facts here: a BambooHR spokesperson told Money the spike could partly reflect a broader post-pandemic cultural shift — people just using their PTO more freely than they used to. That’s fair. But a uniform rise in time-off usage would lift all Thursdays. It wouldn’t concentrate itself squarely on the one Thursday that happens to host the biggest entertainment launch in history. The trend is difficult to dismiss, and even the data folks at BambooHR clearly aren’t dismissing it — they just can’t say the quiet part loud. Everybody else can.

What This Means for GTA 6

First, the boring-but-important read: this is another data point confirming GTA 6 has crossed out of “video game release” territory into shared-cultural-event territory — the Super Bowl bucket, where the assumption is no longer “gamers will buy it” but “society will reorganize around it.” Take-Two’s boss comparing GTA’s marketing to Barbie’s makes a lot more sense when HR analytics firms are already detecting the launch in their time-off databases eight weeks early.

Second, expect the first week of GTA 6 to be a content black hole. If a meaningful chunk of the 5.2 million-plus pre-order crowd is booking entire days off, day-one concurrent players are going to be grotesque, streaming numbers are going to break things, and every leaderboard, subreddit, and group chat is going to be pure Leonida for a week straight. If you’re planning to avoid spoilers while you wait for a restock or a holiday deal, that first stretch is going to be a minefield — our survival guide for the final stretch before launch has you covered.

And third, a public-service announcement from us locals: if November 19 isn’t already on your PTO request, get it in now. Your manager already knows what it’s for. The data says half the office had the same idea — and as that California shop proved, some workplaces are just going to surrender. May as well be on the winning side. If you haven’t locked your copy yet, you can pre-order GTA 6 for PS5 on Amazon or grab the Xbox Series X|S version here — and while you’re planning the desk setup for the biggest week of the decade, the limited-edition GTA 6 DualSense is currently at its lowest price ever.
